Fussy infant/toddler in car

If DS (13 months) is not sleeping or eating in the car, he's a disaster. Any tips? I've tried reading to him, giving him toys, singing to him, letting him use the iPad. In an ideal world, we'd only travel when he's sleeping, but that's not always possible.

Can you adjust the angle of his car seat? Put a mirror in front of him for him to look at himself? We have a brica one (I think) and it lights up and plays music...we use a remote to turn it on and off

We have that one too. Dd loved it when she was little.

Some kids just don't like the car seat. It sucks but eventually they grow out of it.

Dd used to scream in the car. Hating driving with her. She just turned 5 so this was a while ago but I turned her at 1. The rec for age 2 had just started but I couldn't do it anymore. She was better. Then with the iPad she was better and now she's fine. There's not much to do. I traveled long and alone with her at times and it was a nightmare. No real advice except to find something he likes. For her we dl Mickey episodes, and Mickey movies that played continuously.

Yup. My daughter screamed bloody murder in the car for about 13 months. Never slept a wink from the time she came home.

DS is the same way...he is almost 15 months and hates the car seat!!! Its torture when he is done with it and I try to use snacks as a distraction or just playing with him.

Is he still in an infant seat or has he moved to a convertible? My nephew screamed his face off in the carseat until they switched him to a convertible seat and then he was totally fine.

I travel & drive a lot with our 2 kids solo. My drives are an hour or more with traffic at least 4 times a week.

They would scream their brains out for some period in their lives.

The only thing that worked was to ignore. It does end (I guess like cry it out).

I drive solo, so can't "comfort" them. I don't allow toys, drinks or food (choking hazards). I don't do a mirror because I really don't want to be distracted.

At 3 & 4, they know the rules. When we are driving: mama is out of limits. This IMO is the safest for all of us.

My dd hated the car seat until we switched her to forward facing and she was finally able to see us and see out the windows. I don't think she liked facing backwards and not being able to see anything. I think we switched her around 18 months, but she was already as tall as an average 2 year old.

Thanks everyone!

I am just going to live with it. I am not forward facing him. Yesterday, we had a long trip and didn't leave at an ideal time and made two stops along the way, which further aggravated him.

If I am in the car with him, I just ignore him, but that is usually for short trips - not 5 hour car trips. I almost think it is worse when I sit in the back with him and try to console him so I might just stay up front next time.

Lol! I get cranky too during 5 hour road trips.

My DD hates it as well. At first I thought it was the actual

DD was the same at that age. Actually still is not great in the car at 4 now. We bought a portable DVD player and let her watch those baby Einstein dvd's. It really did help a lot.
