Fine motor skills at almost 4?

DS is almost four and is getting speech therapy- he qualified because of very delayed articulation.

His speech has improved DRAMATICALLY with therapy.

Teacher at nursery said he is doing very well.
However, I noticed at mother's day tea that he wasn't coloring like the other children.

I asked her to take a closer look at his fine motor skills. Today she said I should get him evaluated.

He is my third and I can't remember what the other two did at this age.

He can copy a cross but he can't hold the pencil or scissors well.

my son is almost 6 and does not hold the pencil well and as such, his handwriting is not good. I am trying to work with him and we will see what his kindergarten teacher says, he starts K in August

There is a real range of motor skills at that age.
Practice, practice.
Show him how to cut, hold a crayon, correct him.
Our school has lots of tracing exercises & moving beans from one bowl to another with a spoon.

I dont know how close to 4 your son is but my DD is 3 1/2 and was just evaluated and they said her fine motor skils was on the low side but that it was fine and expected since she was 3 1/2.

We are dealing with this now as well and my DS is 4.5. A friend of ours is an OT and she is going to evaluate him for us and work with him over the summer. Part of his problem, I think at least, is that he has literally just figured out that he is a lefty, and because of that his brain has been competing with itself trying to find the more comfortable way to do things. He hasn't shown a dominant side until now, so I think he's a little behind.

if it's a question in your mind, go for the eval

If he doesn't qualify you will get suggestions on what you can do to practice at home. If he does qualify he will get the help he needs
