Not sure if I am using the right term but how old was your child when they knew how to use a scissor and a knife

miki cannot use either of these and I wanted to see what the consensus is

Emma's about the same age as Miki and she can't really use scissors. Haven't tried a knife yet.

yup it's fine motor. i'd say closer to 3+ for both but you can work on it using hand over hand. josh can't do either.

I would say closer to 4 or over for scissors. Katherine only started practicing cutting in pre-k and at that, her teacher urged everyone to keep practicing at home.

Knife? I can't see me giving my girls a knife for several years...can't help you with that.

I agree.

I actually don't want Christopher to have either yet, I don't feel that it would impede him to wait on these skills.

Re: Fine motor skills

DS can't use a knife as I dont give him one to use. I never thought to give a 2 yr. old scissors but according to EI it is a skill he should know how to do Chat Icon

My OT also says he should be able to trace circles and lines with a crayon. Tyler can trace the circle, but not a straight line.

To be honest, I think these tests are a bit much. According to my ped, kids dont even really develop the eye-hand coordination required for writing, cutting scissors, tracing until they are more like 4, 5 yrs. old.

Here is a list of some fine motor skills they should have according to EI:

Pick up pellets (8 months)
Place pellets into container (14 months)
Able to hold 2 blocks in one hand for 3 seconds (13 months)
Crumple paper with palms (8 months)
Place 3 shapes into foam board (17-18 months)
Snip with scissors, unscrew top from bottle, turn one page of book at a time rather than 2, imitate horizontal and vertical strokes with crayon, imitate circle with crayon, demonstrate a mature grasph of crayon, string beads, build tower of 10 blocks, fold piece of paper in half (25-30 months)

If they are not able to perform these taskes, they are considered delayed Chat Icon
