Tonsil and Adenoid surgery
My 3 1/2 year old is having this surgery done on Friday. I was wondering if anyone could give me some post op tips that worked good for them. I have stocked up on soft foods and drinks that were recommended.

Re: Tonsil and Adenoid surgery
DS2 had this done at 2.5. It was a really tough recovery for the first week, especially the first 4 days. Make sure you give pain medication (Tylenol and Advil) on time so DC isn't in pain. DS constantly fought us on taking medicine thst week even though he normally likes it. Offer drinks and food often, but don't stress if DC doesn't want to eat or drink. The best time to offer something is probably 30-60 minutes after medication. Buy ice pops, ice cream and anything soft like jello and pudding. Give lots of hugs and snuggles. Keep DC distracted with new toys and movies. Good luck!

Tonsil and Adenoid surgery
lots of ice pops - the hospital will tell you to avoid red ones in the beginning so buy other colors
have your kid try jello before surgery - they don't want to try anything new after
at cvs they sell numbing lollipops- those helped my kids a ton
mine would not take the pain killer either so do what you can to keep them comfortable
also make sure your pain killer is not Tylenol with codine - there have been bad side effects with codine - most have switched to Tylenol with hydrocodone
it is a long recovery and don't be surprised if they seem to get better then get worse again around day 7 - the scab coming off hurts a lot too
any questions -I have been through 3 times with kids under 3

Re: Tonsil and Adenoid surgery
my son was 5 at the time. He had tubes put in and tonsils/adenoids removed.
what method are they using for the tonsils? maybe that affects the recovery.
Definitely buy ice pops!!
We were told to make him drink water A LOT, even a sip here or there. So i was definitely on him all day long asking him to take a sip. We were also told to wake him every 4 hour hours at night to make him drink some water (otherwise to go 8-10 hours without it would hurt way too much when he woke up) and to give tylenol.
My son had surgery on a friday and he was eating regular foods by sunday. He was back in school on monday (no gym class all week though).
good luck!
