Tell me about your child's adenoid/tonsil surgery
Hi, My almost 3 year old son will need surgery for ear tubes and adenoid/tonsil removal. Can you share your experience? Was it same day or overnight? Was was the recovery and restrictions? I'm so worried because he's so young and can't verbalize that well what's wrong with him if there's complications. And I'm concerned a big chunk of his summer is going to be ruined with restrictions. Any info is appreciated!

DS is getting his out the end of the summer. The advice I have been given so far is to stay on top of the pain meds. Apparently days 3-4 are the hardest. It's supposed to be ambulatory surgery, but our doctor said we will probably be staying overnight because DS will most likely be a bad patient.. Our dr said to make sure he eats normal food right away so his throat muscles start working properly. I'm nervous about DS because he doesn't take meds or eat/drink that much. He has anxiety so I got the book "goodbye tonsils" and we've been reading it every few days. That has helped a lot. Good luck!

Re: Tell me about your child's adenoid/tonsil surgery
My DD had them out when she was 5. it was a tough recovery. Just a lot of pain and discomfort for at least a week. The Dr wanted her to stay overnight but they had no room for her so we would have been stuck in recovery so we went home and between me and my DH stayed up all night to watch her. Have lots of cold soft foods on hand.

Re: Tell me about your child's adenoid/tonsil surgery
My two oldest had them out at 2 yrs 8 months, and 2 yrs exactly. They both stayed overnight bc of their age and the fact that they had sleep apnea. The first week wasn't so bad, the second week was the worst when it starts to crust over. We did use pain meds.
My youngest had his shaved at 18 months. Compared to the other 2, this was a breeze. Dr said he could eat anything right after surgery. He had pizza that night. I was so nervous, but they said it would be fine, and it was. He had very minimal pain. We weren't supposed to stay over night, but his ox sat dropped so they had to monitor him.
D's 1 and 2 had theirs done at Schneiders
D's 4 had his done at nyu
Eta. D's 3 has tubes put in at 9 months and it was a breeze. Completely fine once the anesthesia wore off

Do you think the difference between getting them removed completely versus having them shaved, was because of switching hospital locations, or was it a difference because of the issues each child was having that led to the reason for the surgery?

Re: Tell me about your child's adenoid/tonsil surgery
My stepdaughter had her out at 7. We did have an issue after a week. The doctor limited certain foods from her diet for 2 weeks. He said she would feel like she could eat more foods after 1 week but it was important to wait the extra week to prevent rupturing the scab. Her mother thought she was fine after a week (she really did seem fine) but def should have listened to the doctor bc she had to go back in to have it cauterized.
