kids with allergies..

last year my DD had bad allergies, really bad. It really started around May. I remember the ped last year telling me that some kids start getting allergy medicine as early as March.

should I wait to see if her allergies start bothering her before giving her medicine?

Also which medicine worked best for your child?

TIA.

BTW she is 4.5 yo.

Re: kids with allergies..

DS had really bad seasonal allergies. I took him to the Ped once bc his entire face was swollen he could barely open his eyes. This was at 3.5. The Ped recommended that he see an allergist. I tried every over the counter kids allergy meds you could try. Nothing worked!
Finally was able to get an apt in May (only bc they had a cancellation... he was booked till June and fit me in). He did the scratch test and found out he was highly allergic to tree pollen and some other things. Gave me a prescription allergy med to give him. Worked right away. Said to start it end of march next time. Allery meds worked great! I was out of allergy meds so took him in Feb and was able to get an apt right away so the sooner the better. He gave us a new prescription and I filled it immediately so we'd be ready right at the beginning of Spring. It's a life saver! Without it the poor kid would have to be indoors all Spring. He's 5 now. Good luck!

Yes my DS has severe allergies and we're starting him on meds now that its gotten above freezing before symptoms kick in. We usually start him in March and he's on them until June.

What did they give him? I am at the point where the OTC meds are not cutting it anymore... Benadryl and Claritin.. He has been suffering for 2 weeks now...

kids with allergies..

We have been giving AJ Claritin daily since 2. My doc this year was out and the cover doc said "Change it up every 4m or she will suffer" so we've changed to Zyrtec and its been rough for a few weeks but she's finally coming out the other side of the side affects and its working well. We also use benedryl as a side med for controlled doses. In 4 months we'll move on to Allegra.

ALL generic never name brand cause that's just wasteful.

Good luck

While benadryl is good, since it is every 4 hours it wears off quickly. Clartin is the weakest of the over the counters. Have you tried Allegra (step up from claritin) or zyrtec (the strongest)? Both come in children's strength. You might need to add a nasal spray.

As far as March, I noticed my kids started sneezing (no cold) and the next day I was receiving pollen count emails. Definitely the start of allergy season.
