kids with allergies... epi-pen question?

So we think Ryan has a peanut allergy and are waiting for bloodowork to confirm it.

In the meantime, we have to act like he does. So we got a rx yesterday for the epi-pen. Here is the question (or questions)

how many do you have?
how do you pay for them? how much?
how often do they expire/need to be replaced?

Yesterday my pharmacy told me my insurance company would only let me fill one twin pack at a time even though the MD gave me a rx for 3. I need one for home, school, and after school sitter. And I had a $89 copay( I later foundout its because I have a $100 deductible and after that its $25). And on top of that I just noticed it expires in 4 months..... so now will have to replace them all.

Did my pharmacy give me an old one?

Pauline, first: Chat Icon

Hasn't Ryan been eating peanuts forever? I thought he ate PB sandwiches. What happened? What reactions did he show?

Second, I am copying this post to my friend Barbara (the one that has Scott that's allergic to EVERYTHING). She will DEFINITELY be able to help you out.
When I get her response, I'll FM it to you!

Meanwhile...side note...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!

But in 5 years, he's HAD to have foods that were processed in plants where peanuts were used. Or eaten foods containing peanut oil. Peanut oil is in things you would NEVER imagine and from what I know from Scott, if he even TOUCHES (with his fingers) one of those foods, he immediately goes into anaphalctic shock. How would they JUST find this now in him- 5 years later? Maybe he has some kind of virus and that's how it presented himself. I'd send him to an allergist just to make sure.

We have an epi pen for my DS. My prescription was for a 2 pack. I keep one in my diaper bag and one at home. He doesn't go to day care or anything so I don't need anymore. The copay was pretty expensive though. I forget exactly, but I think it was around $60-70. I think ours don't expire for about a year or so. I would fight the pharmacy to get new ones in that don't expire so quickly.

That's a good idea, see if that could work.

Thanks, I thought they should last longer so I will ask them to replace them.

Val- he has definately eaten things with peanuts or made near peanuts so probably his allergy is not as severe. He had bloodowrk drawn yesterday to see what he is allergic (and how allergic). I Chat Icon it was all coincidence, but all signs point to allergy.Chat Icon

ETA: Ped said the fact that Ryan HATES PB might mean that all along he may have been having a reaction when it was in his mouth, that his mouth started to feel funny, but he didnt have the words to describe it so he would just spit it out.

That stinks. Hopefully bloodwork will come back with good news. Chat Icon

Nicholas HATES PB. Won't even SMELL IT! He's never even tasted it. So for him, it's not allergies...it's stubbornness! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: kids with allergies... epi-pen question?

Sorry to hear that :(

My dd has severe milk and egg allergies - we carry our epi pens everwhere. I have two on me at all times (in case one misfires) I have another 2 at my mom's house, another 2 at home in our medicine cabinet.

My insurance doesn't limit I don't think, but I refill them as necessary with expiration dates.

I think it's really important to at least have 3 or so, just in case one doesn't work when you need it too.

We got a 2 pack. It's good for a year. It was about $80 or so I think, it's been 6 months so I don't exactly remember.

My DD has a peanut/tree nut allergy too

We have 4 epi pens. We keep 2 with us and 2 at daycare. You can get as many as you need. Just ask your allergist for the prescription.

I paid $25 per pack. I would call your insurance company and see what you can do in allowing you more pens at one time. Obviously its a life saving tool and your DS needs to have 2 wherever he goes.

I think mine were good for 1 year. I would take those back your pharmacist.

Good luck - I hope the bloodwork comes back as not life threatening.

I just checked my epi-pens and they don't expire until 12/08 and we got them back in 9/07. I would definitley be upset if they expired after only 4 months!

Re: kids with allergies... epi-pen question?

That's great, glad they exchanged them. I'm a teacher & we have a child w/ a tree nut allergy. His mom never supplied us w/ a pen, but every teacher in our school has one (in the classes he/other allergic children will be in....ie., music, gym, library) & the nurse has one (or more) as well. I believe ours are good for the year.
