Rome with Kids
We are taking our kids to Rome in June. Boys will be 4 and 6. Torn on how we should spend our time.
Would you stick to kid oriented sites like the zoo and children's museums?
Or would you visit traditional places the Vatican and Coliseum?
This is our first real overseas trip with the boys. They have been to the Caribbean and Mexico but we mostly hang out at the resort and beach. When we travel, we have always focused on kid friendly attractions. We almost always visit science and children museums when we visit any city.
I have been to Italy once and already saw the major attractions of Rome. DH has been several times and has studied abroad there.

Re: Rome with Kids
I would definetly do the iconic landmarks with them, they might not grasp it all but they will remember bits and pieces. I think its amazing that they get to visit such wonderful places at a young age :)

I was doing research about renting bikes at the park in Rome and some hands on museum.
I was just thinking we don't even rent bikes in Florida since we ride bikes almost daily at home.
I just feel like my kids won't enjoy the Vatican. I guess we will just have to try it and see how they do.

How about a mix of both? Maybe do a hop on/off bus. Hit some of the major sites like the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the Coliseum and then do the Children's Museum the same day or the next day. I'm not sure I'd do the Vatican.

Re: Rome with Kids
I would look into tours of major attractions. As beautiful as Vatican was I'm not sure kids would really enjoy it. A lot of walking and a lot of history which I don't think they would understand. Can't wait to here how it goes!

Re: Rome with Kids
I just went to Rome with my 2.5 year old...we did the Vatican (a 3 hours tour) and he enjoyed it. it was new to him, something different. Boring at times but bring treats for them...
We didn't do any children-specific activities come to think of it; he enjoyed walking around with us and eating out (which we did a LOT).
Another thing we did was hang out in the piazzas and play games. He had a blast chasing pigeons!! LOL

Re: Rome with Kids
Difficult since they are little. We went when DS was 7, and did only sights, Vatican, Coliseum (with a great tourist guide, by a coincidence - that made a huge difference because it was SO hot, but DS was having a blast because the guy was very funny). Maybe use a hop on/off buss, so things are easier and you don't have to walk that much? And yes… lots of gelatos and great food is the key!

Re: Rome with Kids
Check out the Eco Tour with Angel Tours in Rome - you go around the city in small electric cars and it is so much fun for the kids. They take you to unusual spots that you might not normally see on a traditional tour and you get to see Rome in an entirely different way. The tour guides are young and pretty cool and make the experience fun for all ages.
