How sick until LO stays home?

Just wondering where you draw the line for sending your child in vs keeping them home.

For DD she is definitely home if she has a fever or throwing up.
Our grey area is, what if she has a nasty cold which keeps her up all night where she is cranky, coughing, and snotting the colors of the rainbow.

I also feel guilty when her school calls me saying DD doesn't have a fever but she has been lethargic and not eating all day. I feel like I should pick her up or monitor her the next day but DH says she should go in. I usually send her in, but I feel irresponsible.
DH and I are really her only support system so it's hard to err on the side of caution since we are both are new to our jobs and don't have a lot of accrued time off.

My ds goes in for colds unless there is a fever with it. Like right now he has a nasty cough and was coughing all night but nothing else so off he goes. You can't stay home for every little thing otherwise I'd never go to work.

How sick until LO stays home?

Typically we only keep him home if he has a fever, but I did stay home with him once when he had a very bad cough. He was only 8 months at the time and I felt like a day home from daycare would be beneficial especially since he has had croup in the past. When he is older, I would be less likely to take off due to a cough.

Re: How sick until LO stays home?

I'm usually in the same boat as you. But both my boys have a nasty cold right now & I kept them home yesterday. I felt their immune system was down & there's so much circulating, I would rather them be home to rest & get healthy then pick something else up. They are only in school 3 days a week, so I will make the call again tomorrow on if they go

I keep home for nasty cough, pouring snot, fever, vomiting, lethargy, lost voice.
But, we have a babysitter.
If I were to take days off for each time he was sick or school was closed, I'd lose my job.

How sick until LO stays home?

Fever and/or very lethargic
I even sent her in with low grade fevers

I have to say tho... Other than ear infections (which stopped completely with tubes) she doesn't really get 'sick' that much. Even when she had H1N1 (and we didn't know to be fair) she went to school.

She's never vomited before school. She's like me. we get sick on our days off LOL

Re: How sick until LO stays home?

Generally Puking/diarrhea or a fever.

But DD is rarely sick ever and a few weeks ago she woke up complaining her stomach hurt and she was really out of it. She looked awful and was so lethargic. I swore she was coming down with a stomach bug so she stayed home.

A few hours later, she was fine. She never got sick. Just fell asleep and woke up ok.
Go figure.

But I didn't want to risk it. You can't mess around with stomach bugs.

I keep them home for stomach bugs, fevers and horrible coughs that keep them up all night. For all other congestion - they go in.

Re: How sick until LO stays home?

I am with you as well - fever and vomiting automatic sick day.

Colds -

Sneezing, and clear runny nose - he goes in.

He stays home if he is up all night coughing, snot everywhere, cranky, not his usual self.

If its that nasty where is he constantly coughing like that I don't think he needs to be in school spreading his germs around. I like to be considerate a bit to that fact.

ETA: If the school called me and said she was lethargic and off I would 100% be picking her up.

How sick until LO stays home?

fever or nasty cold symptoms I keep her home.

This isn't meant to be taken in an offensive way, but I get very upset when people send their kids to school with nasty cold symptoms like a bad cough, tons of snot running down their face, sneezing, lethargic, etc...
Its really not fair to the other kids and parents. I understand we all have to work, but we also need to be fair to other people and especially other children. And if your child is that sick then Im sorry you should stay home with them or find an alternative, but its not fair to put all the other children at risk.

Im fair to other people and children and I expect the same respect, and it doesn't seem to me that people really do.
Its one thing to not know your child is sick, it has happened to ALL of us, including me, Im not preaching like Im perfect. BUT to knowingly send your child to school sick is really not right in my opinion.

Fevers (ANY grade fever) and vomit..............I keep my DD home. NO question.

I'll also keep her home with a cold (even if she has no fever) because there are times she's so congested and miserable that I know if it were me, I'd want to just veg on the couch and relax. So I give her the same courtesy. Plus, I don't like sending her into school if she's hacking her brains out and sneezing like mad, I know her teacher would prefer I keep her home them "yuck" all over everyone else all day long.

I take each illness on a case by case basis, if she seems miserable or if she had a really bad, restless night I usually keep her home for at least a day. If she's just a little congested but otherwise totally okay, I send her to school. Honestly, I'd rather keep her home a day or two and let her rest than force her to go to school BUT I'm SAHM so it's really no big deal for me to keep her home as needed.

Lethargic stays home or if she in daycare and they call I pick her up. If they don't feel good they need rest and I'm sorry as a parent I feel that is very impt for them to get better. Fever or virus she stays home. Run of the mill cold she goes in but I ask they call if she is "off"

DS has a cold/cough right now, no fever, kind of fighting eating, doesn't want to nap and is generally not himself (they called earlier just to let me know). He is at daycare. Neither DH nor myself can take off right now, and my mom can't take off most days either. If he had a fever I would have to stay home.
