Latex allergy

Ds broke out in hives 2 nights in a row and then again today. We finally figured out that it was from a punching balloon he got from a birthday party at wood kingdom.

He's been around latex balloons before but doesn't touch them because he is afraid of them popping. He has used bandaides and played with another type of punching balloon without a problem.

Trying to figure out if it was something weird on that particular balloon or if he is developing a latex allergy.

If your dr has a latex allergy did it start early or develop slowly? Are they more sensitive to certain products?
Thanks

Latex allergy

When my DS was younger, we used the kid-themed band-aids and they are all latex free. We recently used one that was not and with minutes he was scratching and his skin swelled up with what looked like hives. Doctor said he may even have a scar from it. It was very noticeable for at least two weeks after we took the Band-Aid off.

I don't believe he was around latex prior to that so it's possible he's always had this and we never knew. We had the pediatrician mark his chart and we make sure he doesn't use or touch anything latex. I hate to think what could have happened if a medical professional had used latex gloves near his mouth.

Re: Latex allergy

I developed an allergy to latex gloves when I was about 22. I was an EMT for two years before that and never had a problem. I am also allergic to latex band aids...

Re: Latex allergy

I developed a latex allergy after delivering my son. I was almost thirty years old. You can develop it at any time.
