I work full time too so I understand.

However on the other side of the coin, I grew up and both my parents worked in nyc full time. My mom actually had a really high powered corporate job and traveled literally across the country and often. I had someone who took care of me and my sibling (she is awesome). When we were teenagers wnd on my mom was always saying she felt so guilty leaving us but her salary provided us with vacations and college saving. My sibling and I were just like you did? We didn't care! We were taken care of well and both grew up to be really independent and normal. So when she tells me stories of how she used to wake me at 615am to make her train I don't remember any of that. Just that I was loved and taken care of. Also she would always take the Christmas week off and we'd see the Christmas show in nyc. Or the random day here or there. Those are the things I remember.

So all of our kids will grow up and this is their normal. As long as they're loved and cared for they'll turn out great and one day when they're older like us or are parents they'll see what we sacrificed so they could have a better life!

thank you for sharing!

Thank you for this. I often wonder if DD will be negatively affected by my not being there all the time. This makes me feel better.

Re: Some days being a working mom is so hard!

It is so terrible!!!! I agree about it being harder the older they get, because I know he misses me during the day & I only get to see him 2 hours a day before he goes to sleep. My conscience won't let me quit my job though... I just wish I had a shorter day or that I could work part time & have even just one full weekday per week off to spend with him... that would make such a difference because I really don't hate my job (other than the commute UGH), I don't mind working but I hate that it consumes SO MUCH time & I can't ever be in two places at once... I don't think I'd be content or good at being a full-time SAHM but working FT is just too depressing because I really miss my kid & feel guilty I can't spend more time with him-- I want a better balance. I call out of work more & take more vacation days than I used to by far, just to have a little more time with him, but I can only do that so much. I feel bad for everybody dealing with this!!!

Chat Icon to all the moms on here. This thread breaks my heat and makes me so angry at our government for not providing a long, fully paid for maternity leave like so many other developed nations do. Awful.

I had a patient actually ask me where my son was being cared for and she got choked up when I said daycare. She said "sorry, that just breaks my heart when I hear that".... this was my FIRST week back to work, and like seriously, like I'm not broken hearted enough about it already!

You can tell that ignorant b1tch that because of daycare, my daughter is socialized, potty trained, has the immunity of a horse at 4 years old, reads, writes, speaks some Spanish, and is more well adjusted and ready for Kindergarten than I ever could have hoped for.
I would have sent her there a few days a week even if I didn't have to or want to work.
She should get out of 1957.
and save her tears for real problems.

I love my job and I'm incredibly grateful for it but being a FTWM is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life...so I know exactly how you feel.

Some days being a working mom is so hard!

I hate it. I am lucky that I only work M-Th but I'm miserable those days. I'd give anything to be able to stay home. I hate working. I just want to be home with my baby.

AGREED!!! People ask "where does LO go when you work?" I say "daycare" and they say "O! I'm so sorry, that s*cks!" I tell them "really? why? Because he interacts with kids, enjoys his play time, learns more then other kids his age, is prepared for school when the time comes? Yup, really s*cks that he's smart, educated, and around kids his own age every day!"

I was a SAHM and recently went back to work. Like someone said, I'm just not built like that and I give A LOT of credit to those that can do it. I personally felt trapped and confined, especially in the winter. On one salary I couldn't just go out and buy whatever I wanted and we were on such a strict budget. We couldn't join an gym for LO and I didn't have many friends who were home with theirs (or even had kids). I cherish the weekends when I get to play with LO but I am thankful that I can work to provide for him all that I dreamed when I was younger!

Re: Some days being a working mom is so hard!

To answer the OP, yes, it is hard... on the hard days.

And I was SO you like about a week and a half ago when I had to go get him because he was sick and he was SO clingy and sad... he was sick, without any improvement, for over a week. I had brought him to the doc - even posted about it - and the doc said it had to run it's course. Finally, he developed an ear infection and then once he got on the AB he finally turned around but wow, it was TOUGH. I felt so bad for him and when he went to daycare, he wasn't himself. When we were home, he wasn't happy. Poor thing. It feels horrible when you're IN it - and when they aren't doing great. I kept saying, omg I can't wait for Spring and Summer because he is sick much less then.

But I have to remind myself that this week, for example, and at the end of last week -- he was great! And that he loves it there and they do activities with him and interact wit him in so many ways. I'm so thankful. So, I try to remind myself that "this too shall pass".

Yesterday they sent me home with his "February Book" - each month they take pics of him and do a bunch of art projects and then put them all together in "Julian's February Book" and on the first day of the next month we get to take the prior month home with us. It is just amazing - seeing him grow from month to month in the pics, getting to keep his artwork, having the pics to put in his keepsake book... it's just wonderful.

But no question, it's a journey, and there are times it is just tough tough tough Chat Icon

We should make a support group Chat Icon we should each meet like once a month in the evening - all the mama's and we can vent... at like a Starbucks... or, better yet, the BAR Chat Icon

ITA!! A girl that I was friends with in HS recently messaged me on FB and told me she relocated to NC and gets to stay at home with her kids b/c the cost of living there is so low... not to mention she lives in a gigantic house.

I WFT.

It can definitely be very hard... The sick days, days of working late, missing mommy and me breakfast, and so on.

But, yes, my parents worked full time too. I was fine growing up, I had the confidence to go for my dreams (and achieve them). I love my job & coworkers. I do something important when I'm home & when I am at work.

I think it gets easier as they grow. My 3 year old "needs me", but the 4.5 year old goes to school and will be full time in half a year! I tell him that his school is like my work: we both will come back & spend time together.

Exactly and I would like for these people to let me know how they know WHICH child went to daycare and WHICH one stayed at home with a SAHP in a Kindergarten class. Oh, they can't without knowing the family.

Some days being a working mom is so hard!

It is tough! SAHMs and working moms have a set of challenges that is unique to them.
My husband and I both work full time. DH picks the kids up by 6pm from afterschool/daycare and I get home around 7pm. I get an hour and a half with them in the evening and an hour with them in the morning.
When they go to sleep, we ALL cuddle in bed, read a book and let the kids fall asleep in our arms. We then either transfer them to their rooms or let them cosleep. We LOVE it. It can be annoying at times b.c we have a queen size bed but to me, this is quality time.

Because I spend a lot of time apart from my kids, I don't like to share my weekends or weeknights with anyone other than my family.
I don't care if I am missing out on a social life really b.c time with my kids and husband is time well spent.
If I were a SAHM, I am sure I would be more flexible with going out but not at this time.
