Spinoff to toddler bed: did anyone go to a full before 2 years?

My DS will be 22 months when DC2 comes along. We didn't buy the toddler bed conversion kit for his crib, just the full size bed conversion. Truthfully we were expecting DC1 to be a little older by the time a sibling came along but life had other plans :)

Anyway, we are thinking of converting him to a full around 20 months to get him prepped and use his mattress in the new baby's crib. Will a full be too big for him?? FWIW he's 15 months now and has starting sleeping on a cot successfully at daycare. Not sure if that indicates anything for a transition out of the crib at home.

All feedback welcome!!

I think its a personal preference - my friends daughter is 19 months and shes in a toddler bed; and my daughter is 2 and is in a crib. My concern with a full size bed instead of a toddler bed isnt so much the size of the mattress, but would your LO be able to get in and out of it safely? I'm not certain if they are higher off the ground then a toddler bed.

My daughter was 15 months when ds came along and people told me to put her in a bed and use her crib for the baby but i did not want to. I am fortunate that she loves her crib and can play in there for 45 minutes each morning - allowing me to get ready and not worry about what trouble she may be getting into around the house. The $250 i spent on an additional crib & mattress for my son, was well worth it for me. I had/have the peace of mind knowing if i was feeding the baby or taking a shower my daughter couldnt get up and wonder around the house. but im that mom that would like to keep her kids in their cribs forever just bc its easy

Ds will be 2 in a few days. We have been prepared to convert his crib to a full for about 2 months now, will just have to order a mattress quick. he only tried to climb out 1 time and hasn't since, but we are skipping the toddler bed.

We will be on vacation in 1.5 weeks and he will be sleeping in a bed, so we are quite sure we are getting a mattress the day after we get back cause I don't think he will want to go back to his crib!

i moved DD to full at about 2.5 or so. she did fine. I got double bed rails (her bed was not against the wall) and a step stool to help her get in and out of the bed.

Also just as an FYI my crib converted to a toddler and a full size bed I only purchased a full conversion kit. found out I didn't really need the toddler rail to convert the bed just take the front off and you have the toddler bed I did buy a separate mesh guard rail for it but didn't bother using it cause it was so low the ground if DD rolled off she wouldn't off gotten hurt.

we decided to give DC #2 the crib and then convert it to a full size for him to keep
we moved DD to a full size bed which we already had.

ETA: IMO moving from crib to full at any age to me doesn't make a difference. the only reason DD was moved to toddler first was so I didn't have to buy a full mattress and I wasn't pregnant at the time so I didn't need the crib I had to do it cause DD was climbing out of the crib. she got moved a little before 2 years to a toddler. if my crib would have required me to buy the piece to convert it to the toddler bed I wouldn't have and just went to a full size.

All of my friends who changed their kids to beds then had to deal with their kids getting out of bed at night. I'm not ready for that!

DS is almost 25 months and still happily sleeps in his crib. I don't plan on changing him over until he's closer to 3 or until we potty train him.

We moved DS straight to a full size bed, we didn't convert his crib because we are expecting baby #2 this summer. He is 2.5, we moved him about a month or so ago. It just so happens we had a full size bed in our guest bedroom so we just used that. We put up rails on each side of the bed. I have found that he won't stay in there if you put him down to bed alone, either me or DH has to go into bed with him until he falls asleep, once he does we just move back into our own bed. So far for the most part he has been staying there all night (knock on wood!), there were only a few nights where he woke up in the middle of the night, realized he was alone, and came into our bed.

Yes, 18 months my DC was in full size bed. Loved the bed from the very first night

Lots of great feedback! Thanks so much! Still not sure if I'm ready to take him out of the crib but we have time to think it over so I appreciate hearing from others Chat Icon

I had no choice but to switch DD at 2 1/2. She started climbing out of the crib and ended up knocking her front Tooth out. It was an awful experience. Something about the crib suddenly spooked her or being alone in her room. We don't knew what it was. We skipped right over the toddler bed to the full and went and got her special sheets to Make it more fun for her. The first night was bad bc she kept getting out but people kept telling me that whenever she kept getting out just to put her back without even saying a word to her. That night it took about an hour but that was it.

DD quit the crib around 12 months or so. We tried converting her crib to a toddler bed and she didn't like it much better and ended up sleeping on a full blow up mattress on the floor for a few months. We then bought a full size bed for her but she slept on just the mattress for about a year. When she was 2.5 we added the box spring on the floor and just before she turned 3 we made it a full bed in a frame. She used a step stool at first and now just clibms up (she's 3.5). We have guard rails on each side.
