Short Babies?
My son is 12 months old. He is only 28" tall.
When he was born he was 19"
I read that average for a 12 month old is 30", so I'm kind of worried that he's very small for his age.
His weight is in the "average" range.
Anyone have short kids? Was the pediatrician concerned? Mine hasn't said anything but I'm going to ask next time.

According to above link, 25% of boys at 12 mo are below 29 inches: That's a lot of kids!
My DS has bounced around a lot (but has balanced out to be 50%tile).
The biggest predictor (I've been told by casual conversation with a height specialist before I had kids) is mom's & dad's height. If you are average, your kid is likely to be, same with very short or very tall. Of course, there is some variation around average.

28" is within normal range for a one year old boy- at one year the average child has increased their height by approximately 50% so in your son's case that would be 9.5 inches so he is not too far from that number- every child is going to grow at their own pace so try not to worry. From what my daughter's pediatrican has said generally you cannot accurately estimate a person's height until age three.

My DS was always in the 10% for height and at about 2 he jumped to the 50%.
I wouldn't worry. My DH was short until high school and now he is almost 6'.

Height is never usually accurate because babies squirm and it's hard to get an accurate measurement. If your ped isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be either.

From what I understand, the pediatrician is usually only concerned if the child's height doesn't change at all over the months. If they're growing from one appointment to the next, they normally don't worry.

DS 1 is in the 0-10th percentile (41 3/4 inches at age 5). He measured 21 inches at birth.
The Dr wasn't concerned - he's always followed the same curve on the chart and has met milestones. DH or I aren't tall either...

My dd was in the 10th % for height up until 2 and the 10th - 25th % for weight. She looked totally normal sized to me and at two year check up she was in the 50th % for both.

As long as he's following his own growth curve, I wouldn't be concerned. Both of my boys are small for their age and are generally around the 10th percentile with an occasional jump to the 20th. They've always been small. Neither I nor my pediatrician have ever been concerned. They're growing and they're healthy.

Short Babies?
I'm tall for a girl 5'7", and my husband is 6'3". I'm not sure how I got this shortie lol.
But he is growing from appt to appt (about an inch each time). I wasn't really worried until my dad asked if the pediatrician said anything about him being so small (he hasn't).

This. My older DS has always been in the 69-90% for height and weight. But my younger DS is usually between 40-60% for height, and has never been above the 10% for weight. All kids are different, as long as they're consistent with themselves, I wouldn't worry about it.

This is what I was told too. My DS was dropping in the %iles, so the ped did worry, and sent us for a battery of tests, all of which came back negative. I'm not going to worry so much...I'm short, and I figure that kids often grow in spurts, and maybe next time he'll catch back up to his curve. DH is 6'1", so there's no telling where DS will end up. At 12 months, he was about 29", and only 19lbs. Now, at 15 months, he is still wearing some 6 month pants (mostly) 6-12m but even regular 12 month pants are too big on him. LOL!!
