If your dc has a mild intolerance or allergy

My dd is on alimentum and in a month she will be switching to milk. The dr told me to hold off on yogurt and cheeses. The one time I gave her yogurt she had a reaction. Did you dc switch over to whole milk or a soy.? Thanks!!!

My dd's allergist said to first introduce milk in a baked product then yogurt and if she tolerates both then introduce whole milk.

My dd was on alimentum. She did well with yogurt and cheese just wasnt able to tolerate dairy based formula due to casein intolerance.
We tried reg milk at 12 months and she got bad diarrhea. Back to alimentum until 15 months tried again but again bad diarrhea. My dr had me try almond milk. No problems. Shes 2.5 and we have never looked back.
Soy i believe still has casein in it if im not mistaken. My dr never had me switch to anything soy for my dd.

If your dd cant tolerate yogurt she more than likely cannot tolerate milk.
Maybe try almond or coconut milk? Unless she has a nut allergy.

Re: If your dc has a mild intolerance or allergy

DD had a reaction to both yogurt and Gerber Mac and cheese at 6 months. We held off on dairy after that and then had her tested by an allergist just before her first birthday. Sure enough she tested for a milk allergy. She's been drinking almond milk since she turned a year (about 6 weeks ago) and has been doing great with it. We also just found yogurt made with coconut milk and have been giving her that as well.

Eta: did you have her tested for allergies? My dd was EBF and never had a reaction even though I had milk in my diet. She only had a reaction when she ate the foods herself, and in its raw form. No problems with baked goods, eggs, or even butter.

The GI did a milk allergy test I'm pretty sure. The one we're they take a small sample of stool to see if there is blood in it. She can have eggs and baked goods. When I gave her yogurt she got a rash and was grabbing at her throat crying whe rubbing the top of her tounge on the roof of her mouth. How do I get her allergies tested? Do I need a script?

Does almond milk and coconut milk have the same important nutrition as whole milk? Did you get an allergy test done before trying these out?

Re: If your dc has a mild intolerance or allergy

I would definitely go to a pediatric allergist to determine what parts of dairy she is allergic to (Cassini/whey...) I would also want to know if she is allergic to anything else. We use Dr. Streuss in Commack. It's very simple, they do the painless skin test then follow up with the blood test to confirm that there wasn't any false positives. They can also prescribe epinephrine auto injector shots for you to have if she has an allergy. We use the Auvi-Q.

ETA: look at the nutrition values on the back of the milk carton, it's not as nutritious as you think and the protein, Vitamin A and calcium can be easily obtained with non dairy foods (whole grains, legumes, veggies). Vitamn D is a little harder to get (sunshine, fortified foods, mushrooms).

Re: If your dc has a mild intolerance or allergy

We also went to dr. Strauss, but his Westbury office. They did a scratch test and we were done in about a half hour. My ped did bloodwork and it came up positive so he gave me the referral to dr Strauss for the full scratch test. It was great too because they tested her for everything so now I already know she's fine with nuts, shellfish, etc. we have to go back in a year for re-testing because he thinks she might grow out of it.

Eta: dr Strauss is actually the one who recommended for me to give dd almond milk. He also prescribed us an epi pen to have just in case even though her reaction was actually vomiting. But in case she accidentally eats something and doesn't throw up he wanted us to have it on hand.

They do not.
Cow's milk has much more fat and protein.

I really struggled with the milk issue. My DS reacted to it and it was hard for me to choose an alternative.

I try not to be overly reliant on milk and make sure that my DS gets enough fat in his diet from other sources. We give him unsweetened hemp milk. It was the choice I felt most comfortable with. It has a better nutritional profile IMO, and has more fat than other non dairy milks, except for soy but I don't feel comfortable giving that much soy.
