Re: Would you invite a baby?

I am in the minority here, but I would not. My kids have always had their "friends" parties with classmates etc and then "family" parties with aunts, uncles, cousins etc.

One year we combined and SIL got all annoyed bc my kids "didnt pay attention" to their cousins (they were off and running playing with their friends who were the same age... cousins were much younger).

I definitely would have invited her! My daughter is 11 months old and was invited to her cousin's 8th birthday party at a bounce place that she definitely couldn't participate at. It was still nice that she was invited!

Re: Would you invite a baby?

Yes I do. She's your child's first cousin, family and it would have been nice she was there for the celebration of the birthday. Has nothing to do with not being able to sit up and touch animals only that she's included. I have a nephew around this age and he would totally love and enjoy looking at animals and I could totally see him smiling and laughing at them around this age.

I would have invited her- maybe she would have wanted to be there just for your child's birthday, and to bring her baby even she can't participate. I always think it's better to give people the option and let them say no- even if her baby is too young..maybe just being there would have been nice for her!

For the record, she hasn't attended or shown any interest in any other of my kids birthday parties.

That's wrong and I understand any bitterness because of this but knowing that your MIL brought it up she is obviously thinking about the new baby and wanting her to have close relationship with her other cousins (your kids). Your SIL hopefully should participate now in family functions for the baby's sake.

Yes. My DS will be 3 months when he attends my friend's son's 4 th bday. DH and I are always invited though even without a kid.

I would have invited her. I would be upset if I didn't get an invite. It's really up to them if they want to go close to the animals, etc.

Birthday parties should be about families and celebrating the birthday child. I would be very hurt.

I actually have no bitterness and I didn't mean it to come across that way. I just meant that she has always attended the family parties at the house. She never expressed any interest in attending the kiddy parties at the bowling alley, Chuck E Cheese, etc... which I completely understand. She and I are actually very close. I didn't not invite her for any other reason than it really didn't occur to me.
If I had a newborn I wouldn't expect to be invited to a 5 year olds party- even a first cousin. My niece is 16. She us 8 years older then my older DS. He was never invited to any of her parties and I was never insulted even a little bit.

Had the same situation: an alley pond birthday. DD was 6 months. We went & she loved it.

The kids are really close now (4-5 years apart won't be much in a few years). Family is sacred.

You could rationalize not inviting, but I'd call them & say that you were not thinking about it since she was so small, but you'd love for her to come.
