How did you know when your LO was done with naps? UPDATED with new question

DS has been giving us a problem going to sleep at night and waking up in the middle of the night unwilling to stay in his crib. The 1 night that he slept good out of the last 4 was the day he didn't take a nap. Does this mean he shouldn't have a nap anymore?

ETA: So yesterday I didn't give him a nap but he slept for about 5 minutes in the car. He tried to give us a problem at bedtime but that only lasted a minute but then at 4am he was awake. we put him in our bed but he rolls around not really sleeping for about a half hour and then wanted to go downstairs. So how do I figure out if he needs to drop a nap vs separation anxiety vs he's playing me for a fool Chat Icon

ETA: He turned 2 in October

I would say either no nap or a later bedtime if he does nap.

DS is 2 and we had to push his bedtime back. He's still taking 1 long nap during the day, though.

He used to take one 2 hour nap and bedtime was around 8pm. Once he started fighting bedtime, I had to take away the nap. he was around 2.5 or so. He wasn't going to bed until 10pm and waking at 5am or 6 am. Took his nap away, and bedtime was back to between 730 and 8pm and waking at 7-8am.

My dd stopped napping at 2. I noticed she fought the nap and would cry when i would try to get her down. And she just started going to bed earlier like 7.
When she napped which became rare she wanted to go to bed later 8-9. Which doesnt work for me. Id rather she would go to bed early so i have my night to do everything i want.
Shes 2.5 the only time she naps is sometimes if she falls asleep in the car. But wakes the second we get home.
Or
Shes not feeling well or has had a few days of bad sleep then she will nap.

How did you know when your LO was done with naps? UPDATED with new question

My ds wakes early like that and will say I want to go downstairs. I just tell him it's still sleepy time. I used to bring him in our bed but had to stop cause it kept happening. Now I just go in his room and tell him it's still sleep time and he will stay in bed. He doesn't always sleep but he stays there til the sun comes up of we wake him.
