The flu

My 3 year old had a little fever last night and still this morning. Took him to the doctors this morning and she said he has the flu. Everything is clear, but since the flu is going around she wanted to test him.
He did get a flu shot in October. I have a feeling he got it in school bc there seems to be a lot of kids out bc of it and he was there Friday.

Anyone use Tamiflu? Did it work? His fever is low now and I have to run out with him to pick it up.

Re: The flu

Dylan tested positive on Friday. She prescribed Tamiflu but said she doesn't give it to her kids. Said it just "may" lessen the duration. I went to get it filled and it was $100 so I opted out lol. I didn't want to deal with the possible side effects either! He only had a fever the next day.

The flu

I had the flu once about 9 years ago. I took Tamiflu and it worked really well and very fast but I've never felt so loopy and drugged from it. I did not like the side effects.

Re: The flu

DD had the flu last year and her ped prescribed Tamiflu - it was awful. She ended up throwing it all up every time I tried to give it to her. I ended up not using it and let her ride it out, piggy backing motrin and Tylenol for the fever. And she did get the flu shot last year.

ETA: after reading PP they did say it would just lessen the duration.

The flu

I just took DS to PM Pediatrics last night because he was fighting a high fever all day yesterday, along with a runny nose and body aches.

Dr said it could be the flu or any other of the 50 viral infections going around. However, she did not recommend giving him Tamiflu. She said the side affects are not worth the fact that it would only cut the duration of it down 1 day. She said if he was asthmatic or had any other disease she would absolutely give it to him. But not to a healthy child.

So plenty of liquids and rest. DS spiked another fever around 3 am this morning and has not had one since. Hoping it isn't the flu and we are on the road to recovery. I have a 1 year old at home and don't need her sick as well...although I know its wishful thinking. So just waiting for round 2 to start. Hope your son feels better

Re: The flu

So, as fast as I started him on it looks like I'll have to end it since I think he's havinh hallucinations. Rather him wait it out. Poor boy is so uncomfortable.

Re: The flu

I would only give it if my son was really sick and tested positive for the flu... It can have some horrible side effects for kids..

I have used Tamiflu and wasn't impressed. I still had the flu for awhile... It didn't seem to decrease the duration or make me feel better.

Re: The flu

Timiflu saved me last year. I felt awful! I took Tamiflu and started feeling better right away. I felt like I was dying on Monday and Tuesday and was at a concert Saturday.
Based on my experience, I would probably try it with my kids. But if they had any side effects I would stop immediately.
As far as the hallucinations, are you sure that wasn't just from fever? I used to hallucinate as a kid when I had a high fever. Tamiflu helps the duration of the flu, I don't think it's a fever reducer.

I know. I wasn't sure what it was from. Around 11ish last night I saw him staring at the wall so I went to check on him and he kept pointing to the window asking if I see that. He mentioned something about race cars then a kid playing the drums. If was odd. Never saw him do that before. He did have a high fever and finally broke about 5AM. You can say it was a fun night

The side effects of Tamiflu in children are much different and worse than in adults so it absolutely could have been a side effect of it.
I don't like that stuff at all.
I won't take it and I wouldn't give it to my DD especially.

The Dr at PM Pediatrics told me that children can hallucinate on it, along with all the other side effects I mentioned in my other post. She said it's not worth it.

Re: The flu

Thanks all. Won't be giving him the Tamiflu anymore. Especially after last night. The good news is the fever hasn't come back since it broke at 5AM. He went back to sleep then and didn't wake till 10AM. Still cool, but just out of it so we'll see today.

I keep hearing now that this is a bad year for the flu and the flu shot is not as effective. ugh! Stay healthy all!
