Using utensils

This is not a post about when to start or concerned my LO's don't know how to use them. They are 5 and 3 so the boys definitely know how to use them, but for some reason hardly do. Chat Icon

Pretty much most foods they just use their hands. Pancakes they pick it up, cut up meats for dinner, even spaghetti. My 5 year old likes to take one strand of spaghetti at a time and eat it that way. My 3 year old does some on the fork and tries to twirl it then gives up and grabs and handful and shoves in his mouth. LOL!

I'm not worried, but wondering if any others have a LO that uses there hands more than utensils. For cereal they do use a spoon and still picks out pieces.

My daughter is 3.5 and she does the same thing. We have to keep reminding her to use her fork.

Using utensils

I think its more about you setting the standard. Its easier for them to use their fingers.

At daycare my DS only uses utensils because they set that expectation with the kids. At home we are more lax about it but I am starting to push it more since I saw him at daycare eating EVERYTHING with utensils

Re: Using utensils

both DD 's 2 and 4 - if I am not on top of them to use their utensils they will use their hands.
I know they know how to use the utensils but they would just rather use their hands.
Just to let you know how ridiculous it can get -
They will even try to use their fingers to drink their water Chat Icon They stick their hands in the cup and try to scoop and slurp their drink Chat Icon Chat Icon

LOL! They don't use their hands for liquid... thank goodness. Although my 3 year old will use his hands in yogurt sometimes. I put in oats and almonds in their yogurt so of course he likes to pick them out with his hand.
