How Can I Teach/Encourage These Things?

I have no idea how to encourage or teach DD to use these words correctly "me" "I" "mine" "you". She also still says "(name) does/do it" rather than "I do it". Any suggestions?

It definitely just takes time.
What you can do is when she says it wrong, repeat it back to her in the correct way.

My DD was big on saying:

I like Abby. HER is my best friend.

So I would say, yes, abby is a nice girl. SHE is your best friend.

It took awhile but now she says it correctly.

ITA with this. It just takes repeated modeling from you and she will eventually pick it up. Like NervousNell's example, just do it in a way that validates what she is saying but with the correct word, rather than a flat out correction.

How Can I Teach/Encourage These Things?

I agree to repeat it the correct way. It does take time but she will eventually get it.

I'm a speech/language therapist... and language things like this are very normal in little kids Chat Icon
like others said, I would just repeat it back the right way to her- basically just constantly model the right way, and she'll catch on eventually Chat Icon

My DD does this too lol. She'll always say something like "Yes am are" if you say to her "No, you're not".

Re: How Can I Teach/Encourage These Things?

By nature I correct her when she says anything in the wrong tense or use. She learned to repeat her phrase again correctly. I never make it scolding or patronizing. I *HATED* that as a child and its why I don't speak Spanish. I just say it as if to say I know what you meant but its said this way, want to try again?

A few times she's blown me off with "you know" and I say "yes, I do, but others may not." had a discussion how people are judged by how they speak and the words they choose. She was most moved when she too found herself judging people by their speech patterns (close your eyes and listen). We made it a game. She's still a kid, but we've never spoken kid to her. Just takes time.

But before you know it they ask "What do you mean by interpretation and negotiation? " haha which was to say "This topic is not up for interpretation or negotiation" Chat Icon Chat Icon A phrase I'm guilty of using as to say "I'm not asking your opinion nor is this a request" because mom said so!

Agree with this. I do that with my dd and she eventually gets it right.
