Feeling like a crappy mom
Dh was bathing 17m old dd. Bathtime was over and she had to put her crayons Away. Dh picks up crayon number 1 and says 1. She picked up the rest of the crayons and goes 2,3,4. I didn't know my kid could count.
I know she learned it at daycare but I didn't know she could do it. Feeling like a bad mom.

Feeling like a crappy mom
Don't feel bad! I think its just a matter of kids at that age start picking vocabulary up so quickly. I'm a SAHM and I am constantly surprised lately by words dd says out of nowhere. So many times I've said to dh "I didn't teach her that, did you?" Sometimes he did, but most of the time he didn't either and is just as surprised as I am. We figure she's just been listening to us talking more closely than we thought and picking words up that way, and probably been learning some words and things from TV. There's a good chance that actually was the first time your dd started counting. I remember the first time my dd counted a few numbers, DH and I were blown away bc we hadn't even been really trying to teach her that yet because we thought she was too young still. But she proved us wrong, bc she learned it somehow

Re: Feeling like a crappy mom
You are not a crappy mom. Kids take us by surprise all of the time. I'm a SAHM and sometimes she will still say and do things that kind of shock me and I say wow I didn't realize that she knew that because I never really heard her verbalize it before. This is the age they start really showing off.

Don't feel that way! They can come home with something new they learned all the time. Just be super excited for her (as I'm sure you were) and she'll be so proud of herself. There is no way we can be there for all the things they are going to learn, but it's ok.

Feeling like a crappy mom
Um stuff like that happens to me all the time! At first I think she's sooooo smart and then I realize she learned at daycare. She sing twinkle twinkle little star which I sing with her, but she doesn't these intricate hand moves that I did not teach her.

Feeling like a crappy mom
Today I took DS to a library class, but we stopped to play at the trains table first. He picked up one of the trains, walked over to a little boy and said, "Here you go!" I had no idea my kid could share! You are definitely not a bad mom!

Feeling like a crappy mom
Oh don't feel bad. This happens to me all the time since DS is in daycare. Just last night I realized he knew the alphabet song. I've been singing it to him forever and he always ignored me. Last night he started singing along and I know that's from daycare. But now that he's older, instead of being upset, I appreciated it. It's something I was trying to teach him at home but mommy is no fun lol. So it was more fun to sing along with his friends at daycare. However he learns it, I'll take it!

Re: Feeling like a crappy mom
Definitely don't feel bad. When DD was younger I knew she could count to 10 and did it with her all he time. One day she just kept going 11, 12, 13 and then pointed to the tv and said "Elmo". Here I am home with her to teach her and she pretty much tells me straight out she learned it from tv!

Re: Feeling like a crappy mom
This is only the beginning and it's a good thing. Typically developing kids develop and learn incidentally. They learn from watching, listening, playing and exploring. So really, you don't have to teach them every little thing. They just learn. You are far from a crappy mom! Just wait until she starts learning things you don't want her to learn and did not teacher her yourself. That is frustrating!

Feeling like a crappy mom
I told her teacher this morning and she was so proud. She said they count every morning. She went to give dd a high five but dd just stared at her as she had no clue what they were high giving, it was funny.

Don't feel crappy but I know EXACTLY how you feel. I was driving with DD the other day and I sneezed. She said Bless you. Took me totally by surprise! They're at the age where these little ones are sponges, they are picking up things so fast!

Please I'm the worse, I didn't even know my child could read. How you like them apples. Last year in K, I knew he was learning letter recognition and sight words. But one day he picked up a book and started reading it. Now that's bad.

Lol. That happens a lot. My nephew came over plopped down with dd and was reading to her. We all thought he was just memorization reading but realized it was a new book that he had never seen. Six of us just stared at him in shock.

Re: Feeling like a crappy mom
My daughter took my ipad, opened up her app and started matching the colored shapes. I didn't know she can do that and clearly she's been enjoying the ipad a lot.

Feeling like a crappy mom
DS did the same think to me at his 18 month checkup. He was being wild, so I said, "let's sit and count mommy's fingers" and he counted to 10 on his own. I didn't know he could count to 10. Now he counts to 20. Neither me nor DH taught him to count- it was from being around his cousins and Sesame Street! He does full puzzles- found that out yesterday. It's fine- they are such sponges!! I'm impressed rather than feeling like a bad mom- you should be too. YOU grew that mind! Good job!

Feeling like a crappy mom
The same thing happened to me - one day DS 2 was playing and counting the cars he was playing with. I knew he could say the numbers but, I didn't know he could actually count items.
I feel like a horrible mom with him because we don't spend a lot of one on one time - his brother is always with us - so I don't know how much he really knows. Last night at bedtime he gave me a full detailed 40 minute recap of our recent vacation - I was shocked he remembered all of the details (it was just last week but still!)
