Weaning from BF

DD will be 1 year old on Thursday. I always thought that I would only BF until a year. So here we are, just a few days away and DD still nurses once in the morning, twice at night, and sometimes 1-2 times during the night if she wakes up.

I'm pretty much ready to stop, but DD isn't. She'll take a boob anytime she can get it and I still nurse her for comfort (when she wakes up at night I assume it's for comfort.) She eats 2-3 meals a day with snacks.

Maybe I should make sure to give that 3rd meal at night to fill her up so she doesn't wake so much at night. I mean, sometimes she doesn't wake up at all so this BF business is very inconsistent. I'm also thinking I should cut out one of my night nursing sessions with a bottle.

I would love to hear from those that have weaned when their baby didn't signal they were ready too. I love the bond that DD and I have, but I am ready to get my body back, help!

Haha we just hit two years and I intended to stop at one. Dd nurses only at night before bed for like a minute in each side. I keep forgetting to stop and she's fighting a cold so I guess that's my excuse this time.

Re: Weaning from BF

both of my kids never showed signs of wanting to stop nursing. with DD i had to stop around 6months bc of medical reasons and i just stopped cold turkey. she was taking a bottle during the day while i was at work, so i just switched to bottles instead of boob and i had DH feed her for a week or two this way she wasnt in my arms wondering why she couldnt have the boob

with DS i am in the process of stopping. the first thing i would do is stop all middle of the night nursing. your dd probably realizes if she wakes in the middle of the night crying, she gets the boob. for me that was the hardest to break bc it is just so easy to nurse and back to bed we all go. but if you switch to a pacifier, or comforting her another way, it takes time and patience. once you have that stopped i would switch to bottles for the other feedings. all kids are different so play around and see what works. DS is just happy to eat...he doesnt care if its from me or a bottle so it makes it much easier for me

Yes, it. is so easy to just throw her boob in the middle of the night. Do you think I should replace the midnight feedings with a bottle or just hold her?

My DD has a cold right now too, so I feel like that's been delaying the process for me too. I can easily see how you can continue longer than intended. I feel like after a while BF becomes so routine that you forget there is an ending point!

I found it easiest to cut out the morning feeding first. Nursing just always seemed like the easiest way to get her back to sleep in the middle of the night. Once we were down to just before bed and night feedings, I ended up not nursing and doing CIO at the same time and from night one she stopped waking. She was 16 months and sleep had suddenly become a disaster so while I never intended to CIO, it ended up being the best option for us all.
