I have to say - I read the book a few years ago, then read it again, then read it AGAIN about a month ago and even from the first reading...while I didn't picture Jane Fonda as the mom, I did picture a stylish, snappy, sassy woman not unlike Jane Fonda!
I think they really hit the nail on the head with casting this movie. It helps tremendously that Jonathan Tropper was very involved...just as Suzanne Collins (I think that's her name?) was so involved with The Hunger Games. They painted a picture in words and then helped to bring those exact images to the films.

I have such a visceral reaction to Jane Fonda. She's just unwatchable for me, so although I enjoyed the book, I'll be skipping the movie.

Legal reasons for who? Jonathan Tropper?
Whenever a film is made they have to get legal clearance for the names, so that they aren't the same as anyone currently living in the area the movie takes place. They didn't get clearance for some of the main characters, so Jonathan Tropper & the director didn't want to change any of the first names, so they changed the family name.
I was at an event in May where the director, Jonathan Tropper, Jason Bateman & Tina Fey discussed the film & they mentioned this.
