Help- Pediatric surgeons at cohens children's hospital ???

Hi all
I am have a scheduled c section in 2 weeks with my first and he will unfortunately require surgery within 24-48 hours after birth. I will be delivering at LIJ so that cohens is right there and I will be using their pediatric surgeons. I am sure they are all excellent. I met with dr Jose prince who I really liked. His credentials seem amazing, very personable and great bedside manner. He made me feel comfortable. He is part of a 6 man team and both he and the nicu tea said all of the surgeons are extremely qualified and experienced. Dr prince is one of the most "junior" surgeons with approximately 15 years under his belt. However he is also trained in less invasive techniques like lapriscopic surgery. Has anybody had Dr prince or any of the other surgeons? Im not sure if I can request or demand him for my sons surgery but in some ways I feel I should have a right too. I am open to meeting other surgeons who could
Be on call. Unfortunately my sons surgery isn't exactly planned bc they don't know how soon after birth he needs it. I also would like them to use a minimally invasive technique if possible and if the most senior surgeon does not do lapriscopic I don't want my son getting cut open just because he doesn't "do it"and he's the one on staff. Also if your infant had surgery did you stay there while they put your child under? I'm so scared!

Hi, my son had surgery at Cohen's and we had Dr. Soffer. We had a great experience with him. But like you said, I have heard that all of them are wonderful. One parent was allowed to go into the OR and stay for the few minutes until the child is put under, then you go to the waiting room.

Know they have the very best pediatric suggestions, I don't know that doctor but working there I would not bring my child anywhere else

Thank you for that. I'm glad that you had a positive experience. Actually I think Dr. Soffer was one of the surgeons on call the day of my potential C-section. What was it like going into the OR while they put your child to sleep. I feel like I'd be a complete mess observing that...

I definitely cried a little after, but luckily for us, it wasn't too bad, they put the mask on him and he fell asleep without too much fighting. Your baby will be so small and sleepy that hopefully it will go smoothly too. The waiting during the surgery was very hard, but the surgeons are good about coming out as soon as it's finished and letting you know how it went,

I have had experience with Dr Prince, Dr Soffer and Dr Hyman I think his name was. My DS was in the nicu and had surgery at 2 weeks. I love the doctors there. They are amazing. I won't lie it was extremely hard when we had to walk our son down to the OR, he was in the covered bassinet, my husband and I both wanted to cry. Good luck and just know that your little one is in the best place.

DD has surgery the day she was born (just this past june) and we had Dr Prince. He was great. We were thrilled with the results. A neighnor of mine used to work with the group and she said that they are all great. My pediatrician also had recommended Dr Prince. We had met w dr glick before DD was born, he was nice too. In fact the entire staff at cohens was great. Your DS is in good hands no matter who you get. But i am sure you could meet with all of them before your son is born if that will make you feel more comfortable. Its a scary thing so you need to feel comfortable with whois treating your child.

We didnt stay w DD while they put her under. I had just had my csection and was still hooked up to IVs and such. I dont think it was an option anyway. While she was in surgery we waited in my room and dr prince called as soon as the surgery was over.

My DD had surgery when she was 2, so not exactly the same as you. But, I was allowed in the OR until they had the IV in. We had to leave before they actually put her under. She also had Propofol a few times for various tests. With that, I was allowed to stay until she was asleep but then had to leave. One thing they did not prepare me for with her surgery was that she woke up crying hysterically and was inconsolable. I later spoke to a nurse-anesthetist, and she said that is very common in babies/young children. So, just be ready if it happens and know that it is ok. Good luck, I'll be praying for you guys. We dealt with Cohen's and had a phenomenal experience with them. It was almost 3 years ago and I was just talking about it tonight. Everyone was begone fantastic. Best of luck!
