How bad is an interior cabin?

My friend and I are thinking about taking a cruise with just our kids for spring break. She's on a pretty strict budget, so we're considering inside cabins. I have cruised in ocean view and balcony cabins, but never interior. But I think it might work. We would get two connecting cabins. That way at night we could put all the kids to bed in one room and we would still have another room to watch tv/hang out in.

Do you think that would work? Is it weird not being able to see out? We are both "out and about" type moms, so I can't see us being in the rooms for much more then showering and sleeping. But I also don't want to feel trapped in darkness either.

I would only be concerned with getting seasick but I also think that depends on you. As far as being in the room, you are right and prob will only be there for sleeping and showering. If it saves a bunch of $ do it, IMO

i have stayed in inside cabins before and to me it was not a big deal because we were only in the room to sleep and shower/ change... but this was pre-kids so i dont know if it makes a difference.

I like the interior more. The small window in the outside cabin isn't worth the money they charge for it. I'd rather have that extra money for other stuff.

Plus, considering the darkness of the room and the swaying of the ship you get the best sleep ever.

Only thing that is hard is you sometimes don't know what time it is. Once I got up to use the bathroom, looked at my watch, and it said about 5 minutes after 8. I started freaking out because we had something planned for 8. I woke up my husband, all freaked out, why did the alarm not go off, blah blah blah. I turned the light on, quick getting ready and he looks at my watch, I had it upside down and it was 2AM. Whoops. Maybe I should put on my glasses next time and look in the light, not just use the glow in the dark hands. Chat Icon

If you want the 'natural' light to wake you up, just put the TV on the camera that shows the outside of the ship, at night that channel is obviously black but in the morning it will light up the room.

Agree with this!

I was an oceanview/balcony snob but then I decided to go the cheaper route w/ an inside room and it was great! You're only in there to sleep, bathe, and get dressed.

The darkness is amazing for sleep but I agree w/ the above that unless you have a clock or watch, you will never know what time it is!

On Shiprocked they say your room is only used for the three S's - and sleep is not one of them.

I am extremely, extremely claustrophobic so I had a VERY hard time in the interior room. I would NEVER do it again. I had such a panic attack the first night I could barely breathe. I had to sleep with the bathroom light on every night after that. I hated being in that room!

It's also a little disorienting because you have no sunlight to tell you if it's morning. Sometimes I'd wake up at night and think it was time to get up but it was like 3am. lol

I think it's worth the few extra bucks to get a window. But if those things don't bother you though than go with the interior room. Chat Icon

Re: How bad is an interior cabin?

Ive done 4 cruises all in an inside. Im normally claustrophobic but it's never really bothered me. I spend so little time in the room id rather spend my money elsewhere. I'd certainly take an inside over not being able to cruise any day.

I will say I do rely heavily on an alarm & keeping my ohone nearby for the clock because you have no clue what time of day it is in there.

Re: How bad is an interior cabin?

The first cruise we ever went on we had an interior cabin with 4 adults..it wasn't bad. We were only in the room to get ready and sleep so it didn't annoy any of us. The rooms are not as small as I thought they were.

We booked an interior and ended up with an obstructed oceanview. I kept the shades closed the entire time. We were literally only in the room to shower and sleep. I loved how dark the room was too, slept so good. No kids with us though. But I think if you have a connecting room I think it's fine because you'll have your own space. Plus I'm neurotic and would be worried about my kids going out on the balcony at night and going overboard (I know that's a very irrational concern, lol but like I said I'm a little neurotic)

The actual size of the room would matter more to me. My kids don't nap but we did go back to the room to rest. Kids need room.

This exactly! DH and I were dating at the time and went with other friends.

Re: How bad is an interior cabin?

It's doable but my only thing was the darkness.
We'd wake up at 8 am and think it was 3 am.
It's pitch black. You could sleep all day!

If you wake up in the middle of the night you need to turn on a TV or a light or something to even see what time it is.

That's what I did not care for at all

I personally do not like an interior cabin. To me its a big difference. Its too dark and small. The natural light makes a big difference too in terms of sea sickness. In an interior room may be because you have no visual orientation or cant see the waves, not sure, I personally felt the boat rocked more and I was sick all the time. When I got the balcony room it was a whole different world and experience. HTH.

This is true because they tell you to look out at the straight line of the horizon when feeling the motion sickness.
It helps orient you.

Re: How bad is an interior cabin?

I stayed in interior for my first cruise and thought it was fine although freaked out a bit at night if sea was rough because I didn't have a window to jump out of to save myself - lol! Our subsequent cruises have all been balcony rooms. I would not do interior again but if I was planning a friend trip and that was what her budget would allow, I would go for it - better to have a fun time on a cruise wit your friend then to not go at all

Agreed - but the darkness didn't bother me but I'm a terrible sleeper so the pitch black helps meChat Icon

ive been in all types and totally didn't mind no view! We were hardly in the room anyway so didn't need to see out!
Unless you are doing the Mediterranean or Alaska-I say save some $!

It was funny bc when I finally was in the room and looked out it was pitch black anyway---always finally had the time to look out when it was night time!! LOL!
