How to get a teaching job
I have my masters in art education. My certification expires in August . I've been looking for a job for the past 5 yrs and nothing. I've substituted here and there but that's it. I am willing to teach anywhere nyc. Long Island or catholic school. Am I doing anything wrong, looking in the wrong places for jobs? Can I still work at a catholic or private school with out being certified? Is it hard to get a job at a catholic school? I'm getting desperate for a job now. I need one badly. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

How to get a teaching job
I'm in the same boat. I've been a perm sub and have had three leave replacements over the past 6 years. I'm searching for jobs outside of teaching because we can no longer afford for me to sub. Catholic schools have been closing over the past few years and since the market is oversaturated with teachers, they will more than likely choose certified teachers over someone who's certification has lapsed. I can't speak about NYC but maybe someone can give you advice there.
I would speak to someone at your alma mater, because they can probably give you some direction. I've met with two career counselors from my grad and undergrad universities and found it helpful. Check OLAS and Craig's List. SCOPE is another option. Charter schools as well. Best of luck to you!

apply to the diocese of rockville centre. They will hand your resume out to all the catholic schools and they will call you... You can teach other subjects outside of art if you are in catholic school, as well as teach if the certification expires- private schools don't really have rules lol

Re: How to get a teaching job
This is how I got my job with NYC DOE....
I printed out about 100 resumes and cover letters. I picked about 20 schools a day that were all near each other. Put their address in the gps and went to schools dropping off my resume. I did this the last two weeks of august. its exhausting after awhile but I did get a few interviews off of it. If you go this route, I suggest driving with someone... they can wait in the car if there is no parking.
Good Luck!!
