Haircut help

UGh taking DS (he'll be 3 in October) to the barber is torture. He acts like a maniac, and my husband and two barbers have to pin him down. I think it would be a lot better if he they just used scissors, but DH takes him to his barber and they use clippers. Does anyone have a good recommendation of a place that might be more enjoyable for DS, or have more experience with this situation? I have a woman come to my house to cut my hair, and she said she'd do it, but I like her and not sure I want to subject her to that torture lol. The place we go is fine, his friends go there, but they don't act like maniacs when they get cut like he does. We are on the east end, but I would travel if it was worth it.

Re: Haircut help

DS ALWAYS went crazy at the barber. Same situation...screaming, crying, I was a mess.

I asked around, on here I believe & got a recommendation for Spotlight Barber Shop on 485 Waverly Avenue in Patchogue.

He sees Erin & I HIGHLY recommend you check her out. From the minute DS sat in her chair I could tell the experience was going to be different. She's always engaging him. When she needs him to look down she tells him to "look at the squirrels" - aka the hair on the floor. The clips are different colors & she'll go through colors with him. As she goes around the ears with the buzzer she asks him if he wants the car to go fast or slow around the bend. Always making it fun & always paying attention to him & his reactions.

Re: Haircut help

I take him to a kids cut place at that age where they sit in a car or something, they have kids shows on and the hairdresser does a fast job. I know what I like and I am right there telling them how to cut it.

I take my two year old maniac triplets to zippity dos in Roslyn. They are expensive - $27 per cut - but they literally don't blink an eye when I show up with three hysterical terrified and terrorizing toddlers. They have cars to sit in, play videos, and even video games at each statuon. Considering how much my boys cry and move I am amazed at how good the hair cuts are. They will use scissors. I took them to a barber once who claimed to be kid friendly. They absolutely could not handle them and insisted on using clippers and gave them all buzz cuts that I hated.

Eta- just read you are on the east end - that would be one heck of a trip for haircuts, but I highly recommend them to anyone local :)

Re: Haircut help

Thank you! Yes there are no kids places out here. Zip pity dos actually came out to the children's museum and did a popup salon one summer, I'll have to keep my eyes open for that. Patchogue isn't too far, I'll look into that. Thanks!

Yes we;ve done the lollipop, cartoons, ipad, toys. He pysches himself up before we even get in there. I'm going to have to look into scissors only. My DH buzzes his hair, so that is the look he likes, and DS's hair is so thick that it helps in the summer to have it really short, but I think he'd do better with scissors only.

Re: Haircut help

my younger son is this way. It was a HORRIBLE experience. He basically attacked the barber, I think punches there thrown!Chat Icon I took him to 3 different barbers...1 with his brother and father...fail....second was with the cute car seats and kids tv shows on....fail...third was where his brother likes, has toys in the waiting area, all female barbers....fail.

We had tried lollipops before the hair cut, after the hair cut, cartoons, one barber even let ds play with is iphone, his brother gives him his DS game, offers to go to chuck e cheese if he just gets a hair cut. We have had to walk out of barber shops with getting nothing done because I can't get him to calm down enough! Ironic part is his frist 2 hair cuts were fine. He whined but that was it! Then it went down hill fast!

Finally I found a woman who comes to my house and does my hair. I get coloring done so she comes every 6 weeks or so. Each time I have her do just a little of DS. First time was just the front so it was out of his eyes, second time was hte front and sides....last time, we cleaned up his whole head.

It works great because he is in his own home, and is much more at ease. She does my hair first, she has cut my older son as well, then we do my little ones. we do as much or a little as we can. I dont have to worry about him disrupting all the other men trying to get a peaceful haircut, while my 3yo screams as if he is being murdered. And each time he gets better. he still isnt perfect, but he hasnt tried to hit her yet so I love it!

Good Luck!

ETA we are currently doing scissors only. I basically try to clean it up. My little one is our "wild child" so we joke that longer hair fits him anyway. While my older son prefers it short and low maintenance!

Re: Haircut help

Have you tried him sitting on your lap. Our local barber cuts my younger son's hair and he will only sit on my lap.

Re: Haircut help

Up until recently, we were taking DS to Kid's Cut in Centereach. I highly recommend it. They have lots of toys to help distract, a play area, DVD players at each station and the ladies there all know what they're doing. The owner, Joanne, used to cut my hair when I was little! DS always sat on my lap, and he went from crying hysterically thru every cut to absolutely no tears, flinches or other issues. Now my DH takes him to his regular barber and he does great.

It's a phase.

Luckily, it ends somewhere between 3 & 4.

We've done it all: from kiddie places to multiple barber shops... honestly, DS did better at the barber shops (and I have no shame & tip heavily if they don't cut his ear off). Supercuts does a good job too. I've distracted by blowing bubbles, showing an ipad, watching movies, singing, giving a basket of toys. Nothing really worked.

Ds is almost 4 now & enjoys getting his haircut. Chat Icon

Re: Haircut help

THank you everyone! He does sit on DH's lap, and yes he was great for his first two cuts as well. He has a lot of thick hair so he started getting it cut before he was 1. I might try the girl that comes to my house, the place in Patchogue, or pray it gets better. LOL!
