Do we owe the money?
We had our front stoop redone. Our signed contract has the amount that the construction company said it would cost us to do. When they completed the job, the owner came by to collect payment and says we owe an additional $250 b/c they did some extra work which they DID NOT inform us about ahead of time. DH thinks we don't owe anything b/c they didn't call us and ask if it was ok that they did the extra work and our contract specifies the amount that we already paid.
Thoughts?

I would not pay them for any unauthorized work. You should have been provided with an updated statement of work to approve before they did any additional work OR before completing any work that was more than originally estimated.

This 100%. If you didn't authorize it, you shouldn't pay for it.

That's really unprofessional on their part. I would dispute it bc if extra work needed to be done they should have spoken about with you first to get the approval. When they started the job you agreed on what work would be done and at what price.

This happened to me once. I had my gutters cleaned and they did a roof sweep for an additional $25 and called to inform me afterwards. I was so pissed bc I had used them for years on a different house and was never charged this and they said oh your roof needed to be swept otherwise it would just go back in the gutters. And I was like I was home no one thought to ring my bell or call me like you're calling me NOW 15m after the job is done? And the guy was soooo nasty to me so I wasn't exactly a peach and I refused to pay for it and eventually they let it go.
It's just thee point. What if I didn't have an additional $25?

Do you have a contract or was it just verbal? DH is a contractor and he gives his estimate for the work and then his notes state that any additional work outside of the agreed estimate will be charged by T&M BUT if there is anything extra he always consults the client first.
I would argue with them and if they did a good job then maybe agree to split the cost as it sounds like they were in the wrong.

This is what I would do *IF* it doesn't seem like they are trying to shake you down for more money.

We've had so many contractors in our house over the last year with this kitchen remodel, and if ANY of them did the work BEFORE talking to me and then charged me afterwards, I would NOT pay them.

i wouldn't pay them and if I had to I would make a really big deal about it. I don't get businesses that do this. They are assuming you have an extra $250 laying around and assuming you are willing to pay for it too. that's their fault for assuming this. what are they going to do if you tell them you don't have $250 extra laying around not everyone does. plus I may have wanted to compare prices

It's written. I showed it to one of the attorneys I work with and he says we absolutely do not have to pay.
ETA: It says CONTRACT on the top. Signed by both DH and the owner.
I'm glad I insisted on a written contract.

I wanted to bump this because just about a year later, this guy came banging on my door yesterday afternoon demanding his money! The nerve!! And then he wants to do more work and wants us to refer him. GFY!
And this is a licensed contractor. I'm about to file a complaint with the BBB.

 I would definitely file a complaint with BBB. The nerve of this guy!
ETS: I'd be wants a referral he should eat the $250 as his error! That would get me to refer him, not banging on my door a year later. I'd be livid!

He rang it once and then banged a few times when no one answered right away. I was in the middle of getting dressed for a wedding and when I heard it was him, I threw my dress on, unzipped and everything and flipped my shit on him. I was so mad!
