pcos and TTC

Ladies with PCOS, when you were ready to TTC, how far in advance did you come off the pill?
Did you see a RE right away or try on your own first?
We would like to start TTC within the next year and I want to be sure I take the steps to be ready.

TIA

Re: pcos and TTC

When I first TTC I was told by GYN to try for 6 months before seeking treatment. (It would have been a year but with "PCOS" she said 6 months was enough). After 6 months I was told by my GYN we could try clomid and acupuncture. My acupuncturist recommended seeing an RE and my RE re diagnosed me with something other than PCOS and skipped clomid bc it wasn't a good tx plan for my diagnosis.

PCOS is so unpredictable. I was suspected of having PCOS due to a history of very long irregular cycles and had a crazy long cycle when I went off the pill to TTC (53+ days). I had an appt to get provera and get checked for PCOS when I got a surprise BFP. It was later confirmed that I have a "mild" case of PCOS (whatever that means -- I ovulate on my own, etc). But I have gotten pregnant 5x on my own without much trouble so it doesnt necessarily hurt your chances. I would try on your own first for sure! There are meds like metformin and things like acupuncture that can also help you ovulate, help regulate your cycles, etc.

I came off birth control in December 2011, tried for about 1.5 years on our own during which my obgyn also upped my Metformin, but that didn't help. Saw an RE during this time also who wanted us to try for about 6 months before we tried any additional treatments. When trying on our own didn't work, we did two cycles of Clomid, and the second one worked for us.

I remember my obgyn telling me everyone reacts to coming off the pill differently - some it takes a few weeks, some months for their body to go back to pre-birth control, some a year. For us it was probably a year.

Best of luck to you!

I have PCOS, prone to painful cysts and get a period every 4 months. I got pregnant naturally 2 times b/c I did know the signs to look for w/ovulating. 1st pregnancy took 2 years and 2nd a year. Each time I was about to start clonus and it happened. I'd come off pill soon to see what happens.

I came off Birth control feb 2008 and started TTC in Oct 2009. I didn't see an RE until May 2012.

MrsB12614,

I was only recently diagnosed with PCOS after giving birth to our DS this past Nov. I decided not to go back on to the pill after and that's when PCOS reared its ugly head. I always had irregular periods when I was younger and have been on birth control since. So I was never diagnosed since the birth control surpress the symptons.
As for TTC, I came off birth control Aug 12' and conceived our DS Feb 13'.
Since being diagnosed I'm not sure if we will have difficultly conceiving when we try for the 2nd. The doctor said we may need to start TTC immediately after I come off the pill to conceive naturally rather than waiting. However if that doesn't work they will probably will place me on Metaformin (I think thats what its called) to help me ovulate.
Personally if we don't conceive after a year, then we will see a specialist.

I have a friend who also has PCOS and with the help of Metaformin also was able to conceive naturally if you don't count the medicine.

Everyone's medical situation is different and you are the only one who can make the decision.

Best of luck!

I have PCOS with 50-80 day cycles and don't ovulate often. I am actually most fertile when I come off of the pill. My RE says that it kind of "resets" my hormones temporarily. I had to go on the Pill for a large cyst in 2010 and got pregnant my second cycle afterwards. I came off the Pill again in June of last year and got pregnant in August (miscarried it, though).

Re: pcos and TTC

I've had pcos & very irregular periods since I was a teenager. I haven't used bc pills except for once many years ago to help stop a very heavy bleed. During the year or so before I got pregnant with my son, I was exercising a lot & lost some weight, which I think caused me to ovulate & have normal cycles at the time.
