Car Seat

I'm currently shopping for a car seat for my mother's car since she'll be watching my son when I return to work. I'd like to get something that will work for him at the time she starts watching him (4 months) and will grow with him so I don't have to replace a bunch of time. I'd also like to get multiple bases so we can switch to my car if /when needed. I'm currently using the Chicco Keyfit and really like it...but it only goes to 30 lbs. Wondering if there's a convertible that will grow with him longer. TIA!

Car Seat

The convertible seats have a much higher weight and height limit, but they don't come with the bases like infant car seats. Why not just get an inexpensive convertible car seat for her car?

That's likely what I'll end up doing...I didn't realize the bigger seats don't come with bases. So what do you all do...do you have a convertible seat for both your car and DHs car? There are going to be times where DH drops DS off and I pick him up at my mothers...so if we can't leave the seat and snap into our own base I imagine that means two car seats (plus the one for my mother?!)

We will probably get a convertible for each of our cars and then a cheaper one for our parents to use.

We have one for mine, one for Dh's, one for MIL and FIL has one of the 3 in ones.

That is why I went for $149 seats and not the expensive ones. They are all safe its just more about ease of install and the fabric etc.

I just bought my DS' convertible seat, the Chicco Nextfit. It is rear-facing from 5-40lbs, or forward-facing from 22-65lbs. That could work for you if you don't want an infant seat AND a convertible.

Funny you mentioned that..I was just reading up on the Nextfit. Seems like is has good reviews for comfort and options but a lot of people are saying the buckles are difficult and the seat itself is cumbersome (not sure why that would matter if you're not taking it in/out of the car). Do you agree/disagree??

I usually take the belts comments to mean the straps so the straps you have to deal with all the time - but I could be wrong.

also the seat seems big so I'd test it out in the car if possible before buying since seats fit very different in different cars.

We love our nextfit. The only thing that's annoying is if someone forgets to loosen the straps before you put your LO in, it can be tough to get them in.

I can't really say much yet because we just bought it yesterday but I will update - we did a lot of research and looked in person (we were between the Chicco and Britax) so I hope we made a good choice!

ETA: All those seats are gigantic, some more so than others, but I think the Chicco was study, had a complete shell/frame, and I liked the fabric and features the best.

We were between these two as well. We chose Chicco and it was a great choice for us.

We have 3 convertibles. We have 2 cars and one for my mom who will be watching DS twice a week beginning in the fall.

We just bought 3 of the same seats - the Britax Marathon. It's not the cheapest, but we bought them on sale and I just prefer having the same seat in every car.

Re: Car Seat

I had an infant seat with 2 bases. One in my car, one in DH's ......you can buy an extra base for most infant seats for about $50 -

Both of our cars now have convertible seats for both boys. WAY too much of a pain to remove, reinstall the saets if we want to take his car vs. mine.

When my parents watch the kids, they either take my car, or if it's for a long weekend, week etc - I install their seats in one of their cars (as they're more comfortable driving their own cars) - but I walk to the LIRR and take the train so I can leave them my car.

I'd get a convertible for your Mom's car.
Britax, although expensive is the absolutely easiest to install and remove -

This is the one we are probably going to get. CFSTL gave it a really good review and I like that it was less expensive or around the same price as the Nextfit and some Britax seats but lasts longer.

I was concerned at the lack of reviews, but I looked at it in person and it looked nice. But realistically, after close to 10 years, it might get stained, dirty, etc.
