Pregnant with Twins - when did your Dr write you out of work?

I'm 21 weeks pregnant with twins and I commute into the city. When I had my first appointment with my regular OB I asked her how long I would continue working. At first she said probably around 30 weeks, at which point I explained all the reasons I thought that was way too long (3 hour commute each day with lots of walking, climbing stairs, standing and waiting, etc.). My OB then said, "Also, thinking seasonally, I'm not going to make you stand in the subway platform in 85 degree heat."

So when did your OB write you out, especially if you commute into the city via LIRR/subway? I believe I would feel a lot differently about leaving work so early if I drove myself and had a shorter commute, but I'm honestly exhausted by the time I arrive at work in the morning already. And just sitting in my (formerly comfortable, but now terribly uncomfortable) chair for 10 hours/day is awful.

I do not commute but I am 30 weeks (tomorrow) pregnant with twins and I asked about work at my appt today. I can say that I am in a lot of pain. Both babies are head down and the pressure they are placing on my pelvis bones, ligaments and upper vag area really hurts. I am very uncomfortable at work sitting in a chair and standing- I find that laying on my side alleviates almost all of the pain but I cannot do that at work. The dr said that at this point, I'm measuring full term for a single pregnancy so that is where most of the discomfort is coming from as well. I am trying to stick it out for another week and see how I feel at my next appt next week.

I think your best bet is to take it week by week and see how you are feeling instead of placing a specific time frame on it. I've heard of people being placed on bedrest close to where you are now. Anything can happen.

28 weeks. I had pressure in my pelvis and could barely walk. Also I couldn't sit for too long.

My doc wanted to write me out at 28 bc of the long commute. He said - if you fall people will step over you, no one will help you, etc. A little dramatic sure. I ended up being taken out at 26w bc my cervix was way short and put on bedrest. I was glad bc I used to have to nap during lunch to get through the day. Not to mention my pelvis was completely seperated and I could barely walk!

He wrote me out when I asked him too, when I was too tired to make it up the stairs to the 3rd floor in the school. I was 32w exactly. The next day, I was in the hospital with pre-term labor. :-/

I commuted as long as I could. At 33 weeks, I started leaking fluid so I stopped commuting and worked from home until the babies were born at 36 weeks. I chose my dr bc she didn't have a set time.....I commuted until it was no longer possible. I don't think u need to have a time frame up front, KWIM?

I am not pregnant now but when I was pregnant with my twins I asked my doctor when I would need to stop working. I asked if 30 weeks was good and he said absolutely not 28 weeks and you are going to stop. I commute 2 hours into the city and have a short walk to the office. At 28 weeks I was exhausted and very happy he had said 28 weeks. I had the girls at 36 weeks.

Is working from home an option for you? That's my plan when I get too big to drive every day. My dr mentioned stopping at 28 weeks, but my hope is to work right up until delivery so I can get the full 12 weeks at home with the twins.

I work from home and wanted to stay in work as long as possible since I only got a measly 8 weeks disability. I went on bed rest at 26 weeks and would work then lay down if needed. There was no way I could have commuted at this point. I had a shortened cervix out of nowhere and was too late for cerclage. (Good Sam does it til 26 weeks and I was 26.5 by the time we waited to see if meds would work- which they did).

I would have them write you out once you feel it's too much for you. I was feeling pressure and pain a few days prior to my apt and was probably doing too much running around, but didn't know until I went to the dr. (every other week).

I am only 13 weeks pregnant with twins but my dr said he would make me stop working between 24-28 weeks. I teach and will be on my feet most of the day.

My doctor didn't have a set time. I ended up taking off on days I felt bad (I had bronchitis 3x in my second and third tri) but I ended up working till a few days before I have birth. I drove to work though, I can't imagine having to be on my feet that long.

Adding: My doctor's initial plan was to take me out at 20-24 weeks. My job is mostly sedentary, so he then left it up to me. By 28 weeks I was exhausted all the time, the pressure in my pelvis was so bad I could not walk, stand, or sit very long. So, that is when I went on modified bed rest.

26 weeks. I had no issues and had a pretty uneventful pregnancy. This was his plan from the beginning. I actually fought him because I have a desk job, work 15 min from home, so I was like why do I have to go out so early? Lol

He told me he does this with all his twin moms as a precaution and has a very high success rate of no preterm labor and this is what he attributes it to.

Of course I followed his orders and went out at 26 weeks and delivered 2 healthy babies at 37w3d, so in my experience he was right! Go out as early as you can!

For those of you who went out of work early, how did you handle this with your jobs? I was under the impression that FMLA was a one time 12 week thing. So if I left two months before birth then that would only give me 4 weeks at home after they're born.

I worked till 32 weeks. I went down to part time around (mon-wed-fri) 26 weeks due to swelling and a short cervix. I have a very physical job though lifting kids, running, squatting (pediatric pt)

My job is held until my expected return date. My c section was scheduled at 26 weeks. I accrued enough sick time to be paid for my entire leave. If I need additional a job will be held for me, but maybe not my job at the same pay.

I too can take a leave for up to 6 months, if I HAD,,but I don't anticipate that

You guys are really lucky that you work for understanding companies. I had to get special approval to take an extra week of leave so I could be with family for Christmas (and that's if the best case scenario happens and I make it to my scheduled C at 38 weeks).

Not a mom of multiples, but my dr wrote me out the day I asked him to.
