OP, despite what is being said here, you are NOT alone! I hate when strangers talk to my kids. We tell them not to talk to strangers but then they are supposed to be nice to random weirdos in stores? And yes I think that old women who want to stop and talk to a woman they have never met just because her kids are cute classify as weirdos. Same goes for random guys like the head of lifeguards from some gym I have never heard of who wanted to give my kids high-5s yesterday at BJs. Go the f*ck away. I am not cranky, I just have no desire to socialize with someone I don't know just because they like the way my kids look. So strange.
I can agree with a lot of this. I'm also shy at times.
I have it happen often - and someone will try to talk or ask DC questions and they both turn mute.
And then I feel bad (but I shouldn't)
and THEN I'm stuck making small talk as I'm trying to do 19 things while loading items on a register belt, find my coupons, find my debit card, etc.. but I really want to be watching the prices as they scan
THEN I get out to the car and I ask DC, "Dude..why didn't you say anything? Why did you just go silent??"
and the answer?
"!! YOU TOLD ME NOT TO TALK TO STRANGERS!"
and then I realize ....he's right.
but maybe you just had a bad day and we all have them. I won't rake you over the coals for it, nor do I think you hate little old ladies.
sometimes you just want to get in a store and get out, with your sanity intact. I get it.

Re: Nice old ladies
Sounds like a compliment. I look at it like I am doing a good deed. My ds is 15 mo. and he smiles at all types of people. The most crippled, elderly people, he will smile at. They get so happy! I feel good about that.

Re: Nice old ladies
I don't mind at all and it does seems sort of bitchyy to get annoyed by something like that, they are old and lonely big deal, it isn't like you have to talk to them for an hour...
then again I am that person on line who talks to the person next to me, I am very friendly and not shy so odds are you would be annoyed by me bc I would likely tell you how cute your kids are in a store too

Sorry but yes
I don't even get what there is to be annoyed about?
Is EVERY one of them stopping you for a half hour to tell you how cute your children are? I'm sure it's way less than that...
IMO nothing to be annoyed about, they are telling you sweet things about your kids...enjoy it.
I kinda gotta agree with this. I stop for a moment and realize the world doesn't revolve around me and my chaotic life. It's nice to make a stranger smile. Especially older people who may not have little grandchildren, not live by them or they don't visit. I don't know what's going on in their lives but just a smile that made their day made mine. Don't mean to sound sentimental or anything bc I'm usually not. I have one 98 yr old grandfather now and just thinking how lonely he is in Florida not being able to see his great grandchildren much. Makes me sad so I'm sure when he does go out seeing a young child puts a smile on his face. DH's grandmother died of Alzheimer's. The family always brought the grandchildren to the nursing home when she was alive and it made all the elderly people's day. They don't get much visitors, but they always smiling watching babies and children play.
ETA - you also have "nice old ladies" in the subject. It's not like they're mean and bitter to you and you're children. They're nice. Really only time I get it is a certain supermarket I shop at where they bus in older people in a nearby community. Other than that I'm out and don't get it often.
I'm with you! It's never bothers me when older people and make conversations with my girls. I always feel a little sad when people say oh they remind me of my grand or great grand daughters. I'm always polite and make my girls act polite. I also think it teaches some life lessons that are important. I want my girls to be respectful of elders and learn how to graciously accept compliments. Of course if I felt threatened or someone was inappropriate I wouldn't give them the time of day but I haven't had that happen in the almost 4 years I've had kids.

Nice old ladies
I don't mind when people say nice things about my kids. I've also told my kids it's okay to say 'hi' to a stranger if I am there with them.
