I work full time, travel a lot for work, go out for expensive dinners and events in NYC. I get a TON of adult time and kid free time.

If I were a SAHM I am SURE my tune would be different!

But I get a ton of adult time as it is...maybe too much!!

Except for the travel, this sounds like my DH. My catch phrase to him when he's at these trendy bars and expensive steakhouses is "MBN;" in other words, "Must be nice" because I probably just ate fish sticks with a glass of wine while trying to drag to the finish line of the day with my always lovely trio Chat Icon

This is our running joke; really I understand and appreciate all of his hard work for our family, but if he didn't take ME out at least maybe every other month for a night out I'd probably be pretty sad. I do confess however, that my favorite time of the whole week is our weekly dinner out--all five of us! Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG! I can't believe you wrote this because my DH (who is pretty much a stay at home dad now) says that exact same phrase to me ALL the time. MUST be nice!
It's a running joke with us. I will complain about a business trip to Miami and he will be like- MUST be nice!
Once he texted me a picture of the cat bowl while I was at a fancy NYC dinner and wrote- this is what we are eating tonight, enjoy your filet mignon!

Haaa, last "date night" involved dropping off DD next door to play for a few hours. What did we do? We didn't go out. We ordered take out, layed on the couch and watched a movie uninterrupted, no kids shows, no bothers. It was grand!

Sounds perfect to me!!

It's the NO KIDS part that's grand!!.............I don't care if I was sitting in a chair staring at the wall. To do even that with NO KIDS is awesome!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

See, this may be a reason I don't feel the need for frequent date nights either- I work full time, travel a lot for work, go out for expensive dinners and events in NYC. I get a TON of adult time and kid free time.
So I really do enjoy the free time I DO have WITH my DD and DH.

I hear ya. Makes sense and if I was in your position I would likely feel the same.

I'm a SAHM so I'm with them literally every second of my life so every once and a while I reallllllly like getting away. Chat Icon

I was cracking up when I read this because I must say this a 1000X/day to DH.

"Must Be Nice" HAS to be the three most used words in my vocabulary since having kids. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Article on Date Nights

I've been forcing this more

During the school year Friday or Saturday is our date night even if its just a movie on our couch, since AJ is at Auntie's. Summer time is harder since weekends are the only time we get AJ back and neither is willing to give that up.

I don't know how much good its doing but I'm really trying hard

I'm getting divorced but I do think lack of time as a couple/date nights def contributed to us growing apart

This concept is foreign to me.

My twins are 3.5. DH and I went to a wedding when they were 5 months old that was about 15 mins away. Since then, they stayed overnight at SILs twice. It was because we were moving to and from California. So we were feverishly packing and unpacking. No leisurely dinner or conversation. We accomplished in one night what would have tsken 6 months if thr kids were around !

DD is 10 1/2 mos and we've been out 4 times since she was born, only once alone. DH would definitely do it more, but I've been resistant. My parents watch her during the week and I feel bad asking on Fri/Sat nights. I really wish we had trusted caregivers outside grandparents.

We have quality time at home when she's asleep but I agree that it's important to go out and reconnect and have that time alone. Don't even get me started on having a overnight to ourselves. Sigh.

Don't feel bad. DH just went away overnight for the first time last month since having kids........my DD is 5.5 yo!! It took me a looooong time to get comfortable with the idea of being away from my kids.

Re: Article on Date Nights

I can't believe how many people don't go out as a couple!!

Ladies, it's necessary to do!!! Find a way!! Date night is the best. It's good for you as a couple AND good for your kids to see!!

And it'll help keep the romantic part alive. Like a PP stated, someday the kids will be out of the house. If you haven't made the time along the way for one another, you'll be scratching your head wondering what to do next lol.

I love the idea of getting out without the kids once a month or so. Calling it "date night" makes me want to puke though.

We go out a lot. Some months more than others. Sometimes we have an awesome time and do not want to go home. Other times we are just wondering what we should do:)

Same here! We both work full time, I run a business on the side and DH is also in school full time and we STILL make time to go out and enjoy ourselves at least twice a month usually more.

Re: Article on Date Nights

I try to get out with DH about once a month. Often it's not just the two of us, but going out for a friend's birthday, or something like that, but it's still nice to get out without DD. We alternate between our mothers and a paid babysitter when we go out.

This weekend is our 10 year anniversary, so we are having a full-on date weekend in the city. Dropping DD at my mom's house Friday morning, and picking her up Sunday afternoon. There is fine dining and Broadways shows in my future!

Re: Article on Date Nights

We usually do not have date nights, but we did have 2 so far this year. The first we rushed home because friends offered to watch our kids for us when we went out for our anniversary, and we felt bad. The other was just last week, my niece visited, and insisted we have a night out. It was not stressful at all because we had all the kids in bed before we left. It was WONDERFUL.

We could not do the regularly though, because it is just too much money for the night out AND a babysitter $$$$. WE have no family in the area.
We do have our time though. My kids are all in bed by 8, and we will make cocktails, make popcorn, watch a move..etc.. It can be nice at home too when we have that time to just relaxxx together.

Totally agree! When family watches them I feel the need to rush home. When we hire a babysitter it gets $$. We spend time together when they go to bed every night and have lots of date nights "in" this way.

I feel the exact same way... and I cringe when people post on facebook "Date night!!" but hey, to each their own, right?

With that being said we haven't had a "date night" in forever. I much prefer my time being child free and I do get a lot of that between work functions and working out and hanging out with friends etc. Funny how none of those are done with DH but hey, whatever works.

We have made it a priority about 7 weeks ago and have had 2 date nights since. It's nice to dress up a little and have an uninterrupted meal all to ourselves. We have kept them pretty short 2-3 hours tops and it's been perfect.
