breastfed baby getting anesthesia
if your breastfed baby ever had to get general anesthesia for an imaging study (like CT, MRI, etc), what was the policy for breastfeeding prior to the procedure? was it considered a clear liquid and OK to feed up until the procedure or did you have to withhold feeding for X amount of hours beforehand?

Is it definitely general anesthesia or just sedation?
My little guy had a sedated echo around 10 months old and I wasn't able to BF him beforehand which STUNK! It was really hard . I imagine for general anesthesia it would be the same.

You have to withhold.
For most places, it's 4 hours for breast milk.

Breast milk isn't considered clear fluid. My DD gets scans every 3 months, and when her scan is set for 7:30 am she can't have anything but water after 2 am, and then no water I think 2 hours prior. Try to set the scan very early in the morning. That way you don't have to hold them off for very long. What i do is set the alarm for 1:30 am and nurse her, then give her pumped milk to top her off to make sure she is really full.

argh. i was afraid of that. my baby eats every 2-3 hours. i can't imagine the torment he will feel if i withhold food for 1-2 hours. and that's IF the appointment runs on time. and when he wakes up in the AM he does not mess around about eating. he is HUNGRY. so it seems worse to schedule it first thing in the morning.

You know your baby best and what will work out best. I just unfortunately have had to do this a lot, so I have found holding them off for a couple of hours in the morning is much easier then say 5 hours mid day.

you're probably right about that.
do you think waking them in the middle of the night to feed actually helps in the morning? my son sleeps through the night 12 hours, wakes at 6am. i doubt i could get an appointment earlier than 7:30. this test may not be totally necessary to do asap so i may discuss putting it off until he is older and can go longer periods without eating

I do think it is better to wake to feed them so that way they aren't ravenous when they wake up. If it isn't 100% necessary right now I would put it off. DD has been getting the scans since she was 10 weeks old, and it was so much harder on her feeding wise when she was younger because their blood sugar drops much quicker. I live in LA, but where she gets her scans the first appointment is at 6:45. While it sucks getting up and out so early, it really is just so much easier for us. It is dealing with a fussy baby for maybe an hour or 2. Then they are put under, it takes a while for them to come out of sedation, and as soon as they are stable you can nurse the baby.
