changing my name.....
In almost 5 years of marriage I have not changed my name.... I wanted to go June 9th to social security.... I'm due Aug 6th... Do you think its a good idea or should I just do this after the baby. If I should start now where the most important places to start?

I would do it NOW before the baby is born so that the birth certificate has your new name. Start with Social Security, then go to DMV. Double check their requirements, after a certain amount of time they need more than just the marriage license - I can't remember if it's 5 years or 7.

Did you change it on your marriage license? If not, then you need to do it through the courts.

Do it now- after you baby arrives you will have other priorities. If you changed your name on your marriage license then start with social security- when I changed my name I arrived when they opened and I was in and out quickly. I then went to DMV and called my credit cards and other accounts.

I would say do it now just because you won't have time after baby. I was in such a panic to change my name before DS was born so we all had "the same name" on his birth certificate. Well lo and behold they put the mother's maiden name on the certificate so it didn't matter either way. Regardless I am glad I started the process before he was born otherwise I would have never done it.

Yeah I was about to say do it now so it will be correct on the birth certificate, but then I remembered they put my maiden name on there. So strange. But do it now anyway, because after the baby you won't have time for all this.

I was going to get motivated and go and change the last name, until I read this. lol If it's still maiden name, I'll continue procrastinating...It's been 3 years so far, I figure it can wait another year or two :P

I agree def do it now...I went to DMV first since it was open late on Thursday nights in Bklyn (coney island). Then went to SS, had no issues. From there I changed bank, credit cards, auto info and updated credit bureaus.

It'll be a lot easier without a baby in tow. I'd do it now just to get it over with. SS and the DMV are most important. You need to do those first.

I just did SS today (I was married in October), but did the DMV right after we got our marriage license. My biggest suggestion is to print the forms out ahead of time so that you are ready. I waited 2 hours at SS today and showed up 20 minutes after they opened. Go as early as possible. My SS office opened at 9:00 a.m. and was told I should have gotten there at 8:15 for parking and whatnot. DMV was much quicker than SS for me.

I cant remember what is on my marriage certifcate but if it was suppose to be married last name then I def put it...I never planned on waiting this long just days flew by.....I actually went to the dmv a year or so ago and changed my last name , i have one id with maiden name and one with married name...but i really never use the married one bc nuttin else is changed. So if i change it at SS do you think I am good in the mean time??/ what about my insurance since its under my maiden name....That is going to be a bigger ***** to change then going to social security...

I would change it on your insurance too. I would think anything to avoid mix ups with insurance by having different names is worth doing up front. I changed everything right after my wedding except for my bank accounts. Been married 5 years and I will say I wish I did it before I had DD. It's finally bothering me that I never changed them and I have no desire to sit at customer service at the bank with a 2 year old. I'd say just do it all now.

No matter what your name is the birth certificate says mother's maiden name on it
Even if you die when you are 90 your death certificate says your mothers maiden name
