Cape May, NJ -

For those who have been - can you share some highlights and things we must do?

We are staying at Congress Hall - researched on TripAdvisor and this is the best place (for us) location-wise, price-wise, and it rated pretty well. Has anyone stayed here??

Just looking for some recs - I saw they have a zoo nearby, I saw they have some kind of trolley tour/system?? How is the town/shops? What are the best beaches? we heard "poverty beach" is nice? Wondering if anyone knows more about all of this.

Also looking for recs on places to eat. FYI, we will have our son with us and he will be approximately ten months old at the time... anything young child-friendly is great too!

Thanks!! We are going end of June into the first week of July.

You are going to love it. It's an adorable town.
There is also whale/dolphin watching tours (the boats are huge), a lighthouse you can visit, and you may want to cross the bridge and hit theWildwood boardwalk. Wildwood is a totally different experience than Cape May...The stores along Washington St are great.
I'm not sure which beach is best to sit on because I always am coming for a visit from a different shore town. But Sunset Beach is best to view sunsets. It is really pretty with a cafe and large gift shop.
As for restaurants Cucina Rosa or Godmother's for Italian. Cucina Rosa is walking distance to Congress Hall and byo! You can request an outdoor table when you reserve. Lobster House is fun but they do not take reservations so go early. Mad Batter is supposed to be great. For breakfast Uncle Bill's pancake house is yummy and next door to Congress Hall. Let me keep thinking....

LOVE cape may. I recommend the Lobster house as well. Uncle Bills as well. The Mad Batter. Hemmingway's. We did mini golf, the light house, the fire tower. These are all right on the beach. We did a tour of an old mansion The Physick Estate, a "haunted" trolley car ride around town. Elaines bed and breakfast usually has a show going on. I can go on and on. So much to do. Lots of shopping in town.

I have stayed at Congress Hall pre-kids but it is very family friendly, location was central (we didn't use a car once we got down there), shops were rights around the corner, beach was right across the street - the hotel has a special area and they will set up chairs and an umbrella for you (so you don't have to bring your own), there is servers that will bring you food on the beach, there are two pools (one for adults, and one for families/kids), and the hotel often has family activities on site.

I have read on trip advisor that it's definitely their busy time and for us, when we booked, the prices went up and up and uppppp as you went from end of June, into early July, then mid July and August. So, it goes to show that it is their popular time. However, I found the prices overall to be pretty reasonable for when we did book (end of June into the first two days in July) vs. before Hurricane Sandy because they are still seeing a decrease in tourism as a result of that. So, that was something we noticed in comparing prices vs. prices from years passed of family members.

You could TRY mid-week to see if that may help with the cost and crowded factor!

We always go for one night the first week of August. It's not horribly crowded. There is never a problem getting a dinner reservation...

We are going to be staying in Wildwood in July. DH and I have been there 2x before (years ago) and this time will be the first time we will be visiting Cape May. Thanks for posting this!
