Mothers instinct - btdt moms
I'm "motherly" in a way - I teach, my students call me mom, I treat them like I'd want my own treated, I'd like to think I'm nurturing, etc.
But that's with hormonal moody teenagers.
What am I going to do with a baby?!
I don't even know how to change a diaper. I can't reason with a baby.
Did being a mother just come to you?!

The hormonal teens are way worse than the babies. You will be great!!!
I've always been very good with kids, my niece, etc. But something takes over when it's your own.

It's all a learning process but if you are motherly to begin with you have nothing to worry about. Wait till you see that little face. And don't worry if you are doing it right we all wing it.

YES! I am not good with kids at all. Generally I am an awkward person and trying to talk/play with other people's kids is one of the most uncomfortable things ever for me. Even holding someones baby made me nervous as all hell. I was convinced I didn't have it in me to be a good mom.
Now I have a 2 year old DS and being a mother truly is second nature. From caring for him to playing with him, it is one of the most natural, comfortable feelings in the world. I promise it will come when your LO is here!

I've only been a mom for 5 days, but I really think it is instinctual. Plus if you have questions those first few days, you have a bunch of nurses to help you out. :)

I never held a baby or changed a diaper until I had DS. It does come naturally but you have to learn to trust your judgement. Each kid is different so throw away books and take advice with a grain of salt.

Re: Mothers instinct - btdt moms
Yes! I don't think I could be a mother to all kids, but its my baby, kwim? We generally just do what works for us and being a teacher, its kind of the same...I try to set things up so that it prevents bad things happening, instead of reacting all the time. So we have little routines, etc. that get us through the day together.
Funny though, I think we are fine until I see another mom and baby and notice what they do and I'm like "Oh s*it, am I supposed to do that?" Like I was in Bye Bye Money the other day and this girl was changing her baby and was talking and singing to the baby the whole time...and I was like "Oh, is singing a thing...should I be singing right now?" I also had to call my mom to ask her if I was a bad mom bc I don't always put an undershirt on her and I noticed another family member always has undershirts on her kids. Then I realize my baby thinks I am pretty awesome and let it go.

It's different when they're your own kids. I was nervous with my first but it did come naturally. With my second I was so much more relaxed.

Yes completely comes to you. You just get a handle of things and learn as you go. It's not easy with your first, but you are with them 24 hours a day and figure it out.

Re: Mothers instinct - btdt moms
From what you have described, It sounds like you will be a great mom. When the baby is here it will come so naturally you won't even recognize yourself!! Every instinct in your body becomes more pronounced. You automatically put your hand behind their head when it bobbles a little, you know when your baby is crying over all the other ones in the hospital, you wake up from a dead sleep when they stir. It's terrifying and amazing at the same time.

Yep. Totally just comes to you. I knew nothing either. But it's all not that hard...diapering, feeding, etc. It's pretty easy and it will come to you in the moment.

Exactly. Motherhood is not something you can study or read in a book. It's just experience and instinct.

Darn it. As a literacy Professor, hearing advice not to read or research is so hard!!! HAHA. It's my natural instinct to just pick up a book and say - ok - let me learn.
But alas - I'll listen to you seasoned ladies :)
