Biting INTO foods - when?

DD is 16 months, and she refuses to bite into anything. I've tried a million times, holding up a soft nutrigrain bar or string of string cheese or long thin cut of grilled cheese. She just shakes her head no, holds her mouth tightly shut, and insists on me cutting it Into bite sized pieces. She has all her teeth except the eye teeth.

She's not a great eater, so honestly, if I gave her no other choice, she would just not eat.

Does anyone remember when their dc started biting into food?

My one twin will, the other still sucks on crackers to soften them. I remind her to chew and make the motion myself and she will sometimes. Her speech therapist told us to put something in her mouth and push her bottom jaw down which triggers chewing and teaches them to chew better. (She gets therapy for speech, but one day I gave them crackers while the teacher was there and she noticed. DD doesn't get feeding therapy because of it).

They can't be trusted to take a larger piece of food and bite a smaller piece off. It all gets shoved in at once.

DD just started doing it recently...Maybe 20 months. She's not a great eater either and like your DD, she'd just not eat if I let her.

I think DS did it somewhere between a year and 18 months. I know I was giving him grilled cheese during this time and he had to have been biting into it cause I Def was not cutting it up into bite size pieces.

DS is 14 months and has only 4 lonely teeth. He's been biting into foods for a few weeks now. I think he just watched us and picked it up. I wouldn't worry, though. 16 months is still young!

DD started with things like pizza crust and it was more like sucking on it, then moved on to grilled cheeses and other soft things. Now at 17 months, she is taking actual bites (I'd say she started doing this well at 15-16 months).

Actually, last night I was eating a cold, leftover chicken cutlet while I was holding her and she took it out of my hand and ate the entire thing bite by bite, I was amazed! (Nevermind that this was AFTER she already had dinner!)

My ds is 12 months and is just starting to bite things like grilled cheese, toast, waffles etc

On and scissors all the way to cut things sooooo easy!

I wouldn't worry. DD is 18 months, and while she's been able to bite into things for a few months, she only recently started doing it regularly without any prompting. She used to ask me to cut everything for her, now she tells me "big girl bites". She'll get there!

My dd is18 months and has been biting into some small things like fries for a month or so. I didn't even try to give her anything big enough to bite into earlier than that because I was afraid of her choking. Yesterday I was breaking up her grilled cheese sandwich into bite sized pieces and she surprised me by reaching out for the sandwich and eating the rest of it by biting into it.

My ds is a year and around 9 months it was recommended I start table foods, so I would give him big pieces of food, like a chip or something, and he would just takes bites. I gave him a quarter of a quesadilla yesterday and he actually sat there eating it and taking bites. It always impresses me. I say just give her something soft and let her do her thing. If she is hungry enough, she will eat.

Oh , one more thing. Don't stand over her. Give her the big piece and walk away or sit away. I found that my ds eats best if I give him space. I watch from afar, just to be safe.
