Sleep Overs at Friends houses
What age did they start for your kids?
What age do you feel is a good age to start these?
If your child has gone on a sleepover how did it go?
Did you buy something for the host? ie the mom or dad?
Any tips for calming fears while your child is away from you for the FIRST TIME!!!!!

Re: Sleep Overs at Friends houses
Neither of my kids have been invited girls a sleepover yet (7 and 4) but I would be ok with my older DS having one. I know that my DS would be fine. And no, I don't think I would buy something for the host. Maybe if anything I would send over a movie, but not necessarily for the host to keep, just to help keep them entertained.

Sleep Overs at Friends houses
My son has had people sleep over in the past, started around maybe 7 or 8, I can't remember really. He has never slept at someone else's house though. Not comfy with that. My DD is almost 7 and has had neither. To be honest, she won't be staying over anyone's house. I don't mind being the hostess.
Growing up there was an incident in which my aunt was hosting a sleepover and an intruder broke in and raped my aunt. It was a horrific experience for all involved. So that obviously influences my viewpoint.

Re: Sleep Overs at Friends houses
We won't be allowing sleep overs, I am a nervous mom , but my DH is even more protective. We have had sleepovers with cousins though, never friends.

Re: Sleep Overs at Friends houses
My oldest DD had a sleepover at a friend's house for her 8th birthday...DD was a few months from turning 8 herself.
I was sort of surprised at the invitation because I thought sleepovers were more of a 10 or 12 year old thing. Anyway, there were two or three other girls invited as well and I trusted the parents completely. She had a great time. Now, she wants to host a sleepover for her 9th in September and ummm...I don't know about that

not yet with friends but my son sleeps at Grandma's and I would be ok with him sleeping at his cousins too! He is almost 4.

Sleep Overs at Friends houses
DD slept at her friend's house for the first time at age 6. This is her best friend and I know the house/mom/family very well. I didn't buy anything for the parents or anything. DD had a great time and there were no issues (now they like to have sleepovers every couple of months). DD has an ipod touch that she brought with her, so I was able to send her an email that said I love you. Plus I texted the Mom 3-4 times to check in.

Re: Sleep Overs at Friends houses
Thanks...DD is 8..this is her first sleep over. I know the mom but not really well..just from around and dropping DD off to her house for parties - she has been to her house maybe 3 times and her DD has never been here. DD and her DD are not BFF"s but play if they see each other and invite each other to birthday parties.
There will be 4 other girls, the mom and the mom's boyfriend. They are a very "respectable" family not that this holds much substance.
I am concerned about irrational things like a fire breaking out or an intruder breaking in or DD opening the door in the middle of the night and wandering off...totally irrational.
I don't want to stop her from going as she is so excited but I know I will be worried and stressed all night if she does go. I just feel like she is too young. I had suggested that I let her go for the early evening and pick her up at bedtime - late bedtime but she is having none of it!
UGgggghhhh I just dont get sleepovers..I dont see the point at all.

Re: Sleep Overs at Friends houses
My DD is having her first sleepover this weekend with her BFF from school. My DD is 4 (will be 5 in June) and her friend is 5. We're having it at our house because I don't think my DD is ready to sleep at someone else's house yet.
Anyway, these girls are attached at the hip at school, and I'm friends with the Mom and Dad from all the time that our girls have spent together outside of school at playdates and whatnot. Plus we've had dinners at their house (they live only 2 blocks away, btw) and have hung out there a couple of times...so if I thought DD was ready to spend the night without us, I would have no problem sending her over there for a sleepover.
I tend to be pretty relaxed about stuff like this though.
If it were just a random friend from school and I didn't know their parents or have been to their house before, that would be a different story...

Re: Sleep Overs at Friends houses
My kids (4 and 5.5) have had sleepovers with my close friends' kids - but not with anyone they have met through school. Unless I know the parents very well it makes me uncomfortable.
