Wow, thanks for sharing those pictures...
It's amazing because my son's first reaction triggered HOURS of coughing...little did we know. Luckily, it's been pretty easy for us to avoid peanuts, but maybe we do need to tighten the reins. I will look into the FB group...

Okay here goes,
15 minutes post-exposure

Gave him benadryl not knowing there was any exposure and he went to bed.
Next morning, he woke up covered in hives and started coughing nonstop at which point I gave epi (too fast for any pictures), called 911 and we went in the ambulance to the ER. They could hear wheezing in his airway on the way there.
Breathing treatments, steroids given

After being sent home, he woke up looking like this the following day (36+ hours post-exposure)

This is scary!!!
But I have to say your little guy is adorable even in the swollen face picture and he seems to have handled all of it pretty well from the pictures!!!!

Oh he is so cute! Thanks for showing pictures of what it can look like.
Dd is 18mos and I haven't tried pb yet, but my plan was to bring to to the ped office when she gets a check up and give while we are there.
My two little cousins have peanut allergies (siblings) Benadryl will do NOTHING to help if they accidentally eat peanuts. They need their epi pen and the hospital stat. My uncle has showed is all how to administer it just in case.

I waited until DS1 was 2 to give it, but I was much more laid back with DS2. I EBF both boys and ate peanut butter all the time. I know they could have still had a reaction, but I assumed there was some exposure though the milk. I gave it to DS2 at 16 months. I gave it to him several times within a 1 week period. We always have Benadryl in the house, but I wasn't really concerned.
No one in our family has a nut allergy, which is also why I didn't see any issue with giving it to him before 2.

At age 1 I gave PB to my DD to try. I always have Benadryl in the house just in case but I figured she'd be ok............up to that point she has been to 5 Guys a bunch of times which is the ultimate peanut zone, lol, and she did fine.

Maybeamommy, thank you so much for sharing insight, wisdom, and your adorable son with us. I am so sorry you had to go through such scariness, and I am sure every day you are nervous about this. Poor little guy.

My son had both almond and peanut multiple times before ever exhibiting a reaction. We constantly ate things "made in a facility with" or made on shared lines with. At 12 months he had his first reaction to almond which was just dark, sunken in eyes, redness and hives. We avoided almond, all tree nuts and peanuts from that time on (but still ate "made in a facility")
He was test for sesame at 9 months (is allergic), almond at 12 months and was allergic to all tree nuts but not peanuts. we were told to avoid peanuts.
At 3 years old he also tested positive for peanuts.
A few months before turning 4, he had his first anaphylactic reaction. It was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced including me administering epi pen, calling 911, ambulance ride, breathing treatments in the hospital, steroids, IVs, etc. After being sent home after 4 hours, he woke up the next day again covered in hives with swollen eyes. I rushed him to the ER where he was given the epi in the waiting room. These allergies are NOTHING to mess with!
And just because you touched peanut and then touched your child, gave them PB one time, etc. doens't mean they are not allergic.
Also another common misconception is that there are NO mild food allergies. All have the potential to become anaphylactic.
We tried these allergens early on and he is STILL allergic. I also ate tons of all of these during my pregnancy.
Wow, this had to be so scary for you. I don't know if I would have been able to act so quickly.
I hadn't planned to give my DD peanut butter as early as she had it. She grabbed a PB cup out of a candy dish at about 20 months old. DH was with her, and he didn't think anything of it. When I walked in the room and saw it, I started yelling at him. She looked at me and said, "mommy, I yike it!". Thank God she wasn't allergic.

I know someone who gave their child peanut butter for the first time in the Dr.'s office so if there was a reaction medical attention was there.
I presented this to my pedi and he really left it up to me. He does not want to say it is OK for liability reasons. He said you could offer it but he does not recommend it. What do you all make of this?
My DD is 18 months, I have held off for a while and will hold off another 6 months, there are other things she could eat.

My mom gave my DC peanutbutter and jelly at a little over a year when she was babysitting. I didn't even know it.
She actually did it twice before I knew and DC was fine. I gave it to DC since.

DS did it himself! He grabbed one of my peanut butter crackers and stuffed it into his mouth before I could even react   I was worried for awhile but he was ok.

We did it at 15 mo. Our ped said 12 mo, but we needed a time we were both around to keep an eye out.
We always have benedryl around and watched for any rashes.
You need to give any food 3 times to allergy test. We did pbj 3 days in a row.

I was told by the dr that age 1 was a go ahead for peanut butter. She had no reactions to any foods, if she had I may have waited...

I didn't want to risk it.
The best studies that show decreased allergy exposure involve exposing kids to farms & cow manure.
I was told by my ped not to eat nuts or shellfish while breastfeeding (does correlate with kid's risk of developing allergies).
We waited til 2.
A family member (husband's side) had a kid who developed nut allergy after being fed bread & baked goods with nuts by a well intentionned grandma.

In my personal experience, the fact that you may not have any nut allergies in the family has no bearing on if your child will have one. My son is a perfect example. We have zero nut allergies in our families, but my son is allergic to peanuts, walnuts and pecans. Never in my life did I think I would have a kid with a nut allergy, but I do. Luckily, his reactions have been minimal, but we still carry epi-pens and benedryl. My daughter was tested last summer and has zero allergies. Go figure.
If you are nervous about food allergies, you can always have them tested prior to giving nuts.

I go to a ped group and one of the Doctors said wait till three before giving it to her. I worry about my in-laws giving it to her. They feed the squirrels with peanuts and dd picks them up in the shells. I have said something but I still see the bucket by the door
