Umbrella as PP said (the larger the better!) Sunscreen with high SPF Sunscreen stick for face touch-ups Rashguards Floppy hats Large Blanket Beach toys Towels Baby powder (removes sand from damp skin) Cooler with water/snacks/fruit/lunch
I've seen people with small kids bring a PNP for them--or a travel bassinette. Especially if you'll be there at naptime!

Another pair of hands!
Mine are 1.5 apart & going with 2 to the beach alone is tough at those ages. Esp if the older one is rambunctious.
Seriously, I go to the beach light & for a short period of time. I bring a beach umbrella, big blanket, water (or milk) & a few beach toys. No one eats, gets overheated or needs a nap. I put on sunscreen early & keep them in long sleeves under the umbrella most of the time. They get changed to clothes & then go home.

Re: mom's who go to the beach
I think every one has covered the basics. One tip my sister taught me is to put sunscreen on before you leave the house. It is better protection and you don't have to worry about the kids getting sandy and then putting lotion on them.
I used the Go Pod when my first DS was less than a year at the beach. It kept him busy for a while and it folds up small. Might be good for your younger DC. It was helpful to not have to hold him or chase him for even a half hour.
And also we go the wonder wagon which was great. You just pile everything into there and wheel it down to the beach.

I will just add Sunscreen before 6 months is NOT recommended. If you read sunscreen labels - so must make sure your little one is under a UV umbrella or in a tent at all times.

Same here. I keep it 2hrs or less and I go very early before it gets too crowded. We sit as close to the water as we can so I can keep them closeby; I don't usually bring the umbrella unless someone else is with me to help set it up/wrangle the kids. I tend to stick with bay beaches or very quiet/calm ocean beaches. If the water is rough, we pack it in and go home - I took all 3 to Montauk last summer with a few cousins (older) and I had a panic attack because I couldn't easily keep track of my three. I had life jackets on two of them, but I didn't trust that the lifeguards could save them if we got in trouble so we packed it in and went home.

Water, snack, sunscreen, towels and toys -
