Car seat- legs squished

DS is 1. He is in a rear facing car seat. He is in 80th percentile for height- he has very long legs. His knees are bent in the car seat we have now. This problem is solved by adjusting the car seat, but it then has to go forward facing. He's only 23lbs, so I don't want him forward facing yet. Any recommendations or suggestions or words of advice? Tia!

Re: Car seat- legs squished

can the seat hes facing (when hes rear facing) recline back? We did this with DS and I was told it was okay to recline it - as long as it wasn't all the way back.

I'd adjust the recline. DS1 was 90th %ile for height and weight and was RF past 2 yrs old. His legs were bent and he never complained.

In some European countries, it's the law that they are RF until age 4. Kids are very flexible, and can easily sit with their legs bent.
There has never been a documented case of a broken leg because they were RF. There have been countless cases of broken spines because kids were FF too soon.

This exactly! After researching the topic I was shocked and made the decision to RF as long as possible. At least until 3, hopefully 4. DD is squished but doesn't complain. I hear more complaints from family who doesn't know the research and tell me how uncomfortable she looks.

I've heard/read this as well when looking into the benefits of extended RFing.

ITA. My son was rear facing until about 3.5. He always just sat cross legged, or if he needed to stretch out, he would put his legs straight up the seat back for a bit. As long as your LO is not complaining, I wouldn't see any reason to change anything.

They cross their legs... my DDs are 92nd percentile for height and they'll be RF till at least 2.
Please get the car seat checked by an official before adjusting reclines etc. Everything is set a certain way for a purpose.
Their vertebrae can't handle a crash if they're FF.

Thanks -- it's more DH than anything. DS doesn't complain, but DH thinks he looks uncomfortable. He is probably fine!

DS is almost 2, in the 97% for height and still RFing. We may switch him around shortly after two as he is reaching the height limit of our particular seat (his head is nearing the top of the seat) but his legs were never an issue. He just crosses them and it's been fine!

Re: Car seat- legs squished

My dd is 3.5 and still rf in dh car because we never turned her seat ff. she loves it and her legs are very long she just crosses them. Kids are way more flexible than you think and it's definitely safer for him to stay rf!

Re: Car seat- legs squished

DS is 37.5 inches tall and just turned 2. He is in the 99% for height and has been in the % most of his life. I plan on keeping him rf as long as possible. He is totally comfortable, so I dont plan on messing with it.
