Shayne Lamas' husband talks about holding and naming their lost baby
Tragic beyond words.
Shayne Lamas has been having to fight for her own life these past few weeks, including her heart giving out on Valentines Day. As an expecting mother, though, that was nothing compared to losing the life of her 20-week-old unborn child.
She and husband Nik Richie are going through things NOBODY should ever have to go through.
Due to the rare pregnancy complication last week, Shayne had to have an emergency hysterectomy to save her life and stop the massive bleeding. A few days after the baby was lost, a social worker from the hospital and someone involved in the religion affiliated with the hospital asked if Nik wanted to know the gender.
After telling him it was "a beautiful boy," they then asked the grieving father if he wanted to view his son for closure — that's when he was taken to a room where his son kept. They then asked him to hold the baby while they prayed.
That's when Nik was told he needed to also name him, so they could fill out the birth certificate. With emotion, he chose, Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie.
Nik said it was the hardest thing he's ever done, which we completely understand.
With Shayne still in ICU and in really bad shape, Nik has found the time to write a letter to his lost son, which said:
Dear R.J.,
I'm writing this to say thank you, to let you know how truly blessed I am to be your father. You brought meaning to your parents' life in a way you'll never know and you'll always be in our hearts and thoughts.
I name you Rex Jagger, R.J. You had a name, a family, and a life ready for the taking. I'm realizing that life doesn't always work out the way you imagine. I'm sorry.
God has a plan for us all. He gave me an amazing son you will always watch over our family. You saved your mother's life with your passing, and I will never forget how much this means to me, R.J. In family, we sacrifice for each other. You gave your life for us. You showed me how to love.
I need you to know that I held you, spoke to you, kissed you and that you'll be remembered. You are perfect. You will always be my son. I'm proud of you, always. I love you, Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie.
Dad.
No words could ever express how sorry we are that this has happened.

How brave of him to view and hold his son then write one of the most heartfelt letters I've ever read. I can't imagine the pain and sadness they feel. I hope Shayne recovers and they can heal together as a family.

God she had a hysterectomy too? This is so tragic. I cannot even imagine waking from that. I wish them health and happiness moving forward.

Shayne Lamas Shares Emotional Statement After Leaving ICU
It's been less than two weeks since Shayne Dahl Lamas-Richie suddenly collapsed, was rushed to the hospital, and suffered a miscarriage, but the 28-year-old former "Bachelor" star is seemingly on the mend.
"Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers," she said in a statement on Thursday. "I've cried reading the expression of generosity and warmth from everyone. I'm out of the ICU at Mission Viejo Hospital. I cannot thank the medical staff here enough for not giving up on me."
Lorenzo Lamas's daughter then took a more personal tone. "Thank you to my father and his wife, my mother, my sisters, my grandmother and New York Family, my husband's family, and to my husband for never leaving my side. Nik, your strength can never be measured. I love you."
But she wasn't done just yet. She took the opportunity to make a personal plea to others to help. "To everyone out there, please donate blood. You can save a life like mine. In loving memory of my son, Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie."
Shayne and Nik tied the knot about four years ago and welcomed their first child, a daughter named Press Dahl Lamas-Richie, in November 2011. They announced they were expecting again in January 2014, when Shayne was about 12 weeks along. Rex Jagger was the name they intended to give to the baby boy they lost in the miscarriage.
"My wife is a true fighter," Nik shared last week. "Her heart gave out on Valentine's Day and we had to start the rehabilitation process all over again." And while there's no word as to what caused this tragic loss exactly, it's clear that — thanks to the support of her medical team and loved ones — Shayne is on the road to recovery.
Glad to see she's out of ICU and recovering.
