Flying with a carseat - several questions!
Who has taken their child's convertible car seat on an airplane? DD will be just over 2 when we fly over the summer, and we will be renting a car at our destination, so I wanted to bring one of her seats with us. Is there a good place to find out which seats are approved for airplane travel? We have a Britax Marathon and a Graco Size4Me, so we can take either. Also, did anyone use one of those car seat caddy things to drag the seat through the airport? Finally, if you rented a car at your destination, was there any way to assure ahead of time that your car seat would be a good fit for the car you were renting? TIA!

i cant give you much info bc when i flew with dd we used her infant seat...but we did use the j.l. childress wheelie car seat travel bag and i would not recommend it
by the time we got from the car (which we parked in a lot) to the gate the bag ripped. it was a small hole and we taped it up so that we were able to use it to get home...but regardless it should have lasted longer

Mine has a sticker on the side of it saying it was approved for air travel...check your seat if you are wondering if you can bring your existing one.

we flew last spring when my son was 2 1/2... we have a britax convertible & it fit fine in the seat. we also used one of those caddy things WHICH was a lifesaver!!!! not only did it make it easier walking through the airport, but it was a great holder for random things we didnt want to carry lol we also had a transfer so we couldnt have done the trip without it!! worth every penny!!

We brought our britax boulevard and it was fine. We didn't buy a caddy DH carried it in the airport. It wasn't too bad, we checked our bags right away and DS was in his stroller and we only brought one carry on luggage and I had a large bag. We didn't rent a car, there was a shuttle can but we put the carseat in without a problem.

look for the sticker on your car seat that says FAA approved some flight attentents ask to see it
there is really no way to know what you car you are getting to you get to the car rental place - most don't assign cars till people get there - but a phone call 24 hours in advance may help
the other option is to check your car seat - car seat check for free
if you don't check the car seat - take your child's shoes off right away - they can kick the seat in front very easily - the car seat is also supposed to go all the way inside - so you really need a window seat

as far as rental car - Car seats are NOT car specific. Yes some fit in certain cars better but any seat will fit in any car.

We flew to WY this summer with DD who was 2.5 with her convertible car seat.
Just check the owner's manual on the seat. As long as it says: Certified For Use In Aircraft using 5-point harness, you will be fine.
Here is a website for the FAA that I found helpful. FAA
We purchased the following to carry the car seat around in the airports. We were able to carry it on our back like a back pack. We could also throw DDs lovies and blanket in there as well. Brica Cover Guard Car Seat Travel Case
We flew Southwest and they required we use the car seat on the window seat. DH was able to easily install the car seat within a minute or two using the airplane seat belt and hooking it behind the car seat.

No the car seat is going on the seat if you aren't checking it.

Although it is allowed manufacturers don't recommend checking your carsseats (either gate or baggage) because of how they may be handled. It gives the seat an unknown history and the seat could potentially have damage that you may not be able to see.
It doesn't count as a carry on. As for what seat to bring, Personally I would bring the one that is typically easier to install properly which would probably be the size4me.

This was exactly what I was thinking about checking it. That's not happening. It will be coming with us on the plane. They toss stuff around when loading baggage, and I don't want any damage to the seat.
