pumps and insurance

question for mama's who pumped. have any of you used a hospital grade pump? Did you find it much more efficient than the personal use ones on the market? If your insurance covered your pump did they approve a hospital grade one? Mine is covered 100% I just want to make sure I'm choosing the best one because I wasn't able to pump or produce much with peter and I'd like to set myself up to be more successful this time around.

I still have the medela freestyle i hardly used from my son. I would get new shields and tubes for that but i never got more than 1-2 oz. thinking maybe i should look into something else.

My insurance offered Medela, Playtex, Armana (sp?). I never used hospital grade...prob should since I make about 1/2 gallon a day & takes forever to express.

Do you mean you never got more than 1-2oz in addition to nursing? Because that's still a lot if you are nursing. The average mom produces .5-2oz combined from pumping (if they are nursing and not EP). I've used hospital grade and my own and I will get the same amount, the hospital grade just seemed to do it a little quicker. But the $$ to rent one wasn't worth the extra 5 minutes.

Mine was also covered 100%, but since we have a Durable Medical Equipment deductible I ended up paying for it anyway. Just to give you a heads up to look into your policy. I didn't know until I got the bill. Anyway, my ins covered the Medella and I've been using it for 6 mos with no complaints, but I don't have anything else to compare it to. In the beginning when I was engorged I would pump for 20 min and only get 2.5 oz. Now I get the same amt but in 7 min. Not sure if that's just me or the pump.

Mine was covered 100%. I am not sure what is considered hospital grade, but I was happy with my double electric pump. I have the Ameda purely yours and I could pump 4-6 oz 1-2 times a day in addition to bf'ing.

Re: pumps and insurance

I was given 3 suppliers I could chose from. One explained that my insurance covers reg breast pumps that are yours to keep. They cover 3 months of hospital grade pump rental. After that your on your own. That company also said that they needed a medical necessity note from dr and hospital which would be reviewed with their medical staff.
I went with the company that required less info and I was able to get it before the baby is born.
