Any Winthrop representative here?

During my last pregnancy there was someone from Winthrop that made a few posts- I think it was a nurse.

I wish there was. I'm hearing so much negative feedback about the rooming in and the push for breastfeeding that I'm stressing about the time that I'll spend there!

i felt the same way until i called & spoke to the director. she assured me they'd make me feel as comfy as possible, but that their staff is trained in a specific way (all rn's are lc's now), so there is a heightened awareness.

however, if i wanted to do things differently, all i had to do was say so. if i met resistance, i need to speak up & say how i felt about anything i though they were doing to make me feel anything less than comfy. if all else, i can ask to speak to the head nurse, but she assured me that in most cases where patients felt less cared for, it helps everyone involved to say something.

Every hospital is pushing rooming in. So that won't change at another hospital. As far as feeding. If you start with BF most hospital will push for you to stick with it. Mostly cause it is difficult in the beginning but there is zero issue with formula if that's what you want. They can't refuse to give it to you......that would open themselves up to too many lawsuits.

I was unhappy there and would not want to deliver there again. Luckily I was there less than 48 hours, including the delivery. Even after my ped suggested my DS (who dropped 9 oz in 2 days) be supplemented with formula bc he looked a little dehydrated, the nurse still felt the need to tell me that I didn't HAVE to give him formula. It was so incredibly annoying. I did hive him some, BF is stressful enough without having to worry that my child is starving. He cried all the time. And I actually have gone on to EBF for 5 months now, no thanks to them. Even their LC was subpar. She told me DS' latch was great when I knew it wasn't. Had to see 2 other LC's before we got DS to latch successfully. Not to mention that my OB specifically asked that my DS not room in given my medical history and still they wouldn't take him. It once took 3 calls to the nurses station and 4 hours (and it was 1AM when I started calling) to get them to take my DS even after I told them what my OB said. She later told me that Winthrop called her to confirm that she had ordered no overnight rooming in. Chat Icon

crashing but ugh, this saddens me to read this because I delivered my DS there almost 18 months ago. I FF'd only and while the nurse did make comments that they "weren't made of money" when I kept asking for more formula they did give it to me. They also took DS overnight which was a big help to me because I was just exhausted.

I am curious to see if anyone who FF'd from the start recently delivered there and had any issues with the formula and rooming in? Stinks because I like my OB so would stick with him if/when I eventually get pg with #2 but he is only affiliated with Winthrop.

Re: Any Winthrop representative here?

Crashing as well.

I delivered there in Sept my 3rd and was highly disappointed. I was very happy there with my other 2 deliveries
If you are on the fence about breastfeeding tell them you are going to do both. I tried bf and baby wasn't eating and then it became a production to get formula. The nurses were not helpful regarding the getting him to latch.

As regards to rooming in. If you want your rest don't feel bad sending the baby to the nursery they will take them. Do what is best for you and not the nurses.

Good Luck

I delivered there almost a year ago and had a great experience so I am in the minority. I FF right from the start and got no pressure by anyone to breastfeed. They didn't push me to have the baby room in either. As a matter of fact, the nurse knew I was so exhausted after our visitors left she told me I could bring the baby back whenever I wanted and she wouldn't even disturb me during the night because she knew I was so tired. I guess it depends on the person because with my formula fed baby that slept in the nursery I had no cpmplaints/.

Any Winthrop representative here?

I delivered there exactly one year ago and going to be having my second there in a few months. I exclusively FF and they never questioned it once, nor did they send a lactation consultant or anyone else in to try to get me to BF. In the delivery room right after I gave birth, the nurse gave DD a paci. Also, they asked me if I would like to keep the baby in the nursery overnight and I said heck yes. I also had a roommate and they took her baby too. She BF during the day and FF at night bc she was having a horrible recovery from her C section. Neither one of us had any issues with either of those situations.

I'm scared now though that things may have changed since last year!! I really hope not!

Yes- you shouldn't worry so much about it. Winthrop is Baby Friendly, which means they support and encourage exclusive breastfeeding, but they need to do what is best for the Mom bc that is ultimately best for the baby. I just had my fourth baby there and the nurses in postpartum were very sensitive to helping me rest when I was tired. As long as you communicate your plan they will honor and support it.
Besides- what really matters is the quality of your doctor and the nursing care in labor and delivery. I would have a baby wherever my doctor told me to, and knowing that he has confidence in Winthrop is all I ever needed to know. I had an amazing birth experience every time because of the excellent care and attention given by my doctor and the nurses in the delivery room, and those are the memories I cherish.
Btw- NSLIJ and South Nassau are also seeking Baby Friendly accreditation and are following the same protocol for rooming in and breastfeeding.

I was there 5 months ago and would have never known there was a "rooming in" or breastfeeding rule. They took my baby every night and brought me formula without any judgement whatsoever. One nurse even said to me when I first asked for formula, "I know what you have heard about us but I will never push or judge you either way." Maybe it depends on the nurse. I was there 5 days.

Any Winthrop representative here?

I will be delivering there in 3 weeks and I personally I would go to pretty much any hospital my OB delivered at. I found the care that my OB has provided paramount to any potential experience I may have at winthrop for the 4 days I will be there. I know as a patient we have to all speak up for what we want for our care and our babies.

I also have heard that most hospitals are on the rooming in and breastfeeding campaign is what is "best" for newborns so I doubt its just winthrop that is doing this.

My questions for them actually have nothing to do with rooming in or breastfeeding, but I guess that is where the thread wanted to go.

I had my DD there two years ago and they were great. More recently, my friend had her son in December and I believe she is FF and she didn't complain about anyone being snarky or pushy with the BF. They did ask her if she needs help with BF, and I think it didn't work out for her. Good luck! If you like your OB, I would stick with hospital. Winthrop has a NICU and the L&D nurses there rock! I spent more time in L&D laboring than in recovery.. LOL!
