Baby Showers & Registries

Both are fairly new things to me - and to my family as well, as traditionally, baby showers are done after the baby's born. We're going to do one before, still trying to figure out details and all that, so it won't be anything too big, but have a few questions!

1. Around what time do you start planning baby shower? When do you normally send invites? Around what time do you ideally have it?

2. When did you start registering for things?

3. Anyone planning a shower at home/backyard type of thing? Any pros/cons to consider? Trying to think if this could be a good choice for us since it would be during summer time.

Anything else I need to keep in mind? :)

Re: Baby Showers & Registries

We registered when we found out the gender(s) - so after our 20 week scan (we found out at 16 weeks, but wanted to be 100% sure).

I felt that doing it sooner vs. later was the best decision for me b/c the process was a bit exhausting! I had time to register earlier, and then continue to tweak until the invites went out.

My shower will be on 2/9 - and I'm scheduled for delivery on 4/7 (but will most likely go earlier in March.) We started planning the shower in November/December (about three months prior) - just so we had availability with our top choices for the venues, etc.

Re: Baby Showers & Registries

Congrats on the pregnancy!!!

As for the shower questions.

1. Start planning during the 3rd trimester...usually held half-way through the 3rd, sometimes closer to the start for some, so you have time to set-up, return/exchange, etc before baby is born.

Ex. DD was due in mid-April. My shower was first week of March or last week of February.

2. I would start registering after your 20 weeks along. You can start it and then spend the next month or so adding things to it, since it's a lot of work to do it all at once.

1) a When to have the shower is a personal choice but it is most common to do it in the third trimester. I was 33 weeks at my shower-I am glad it was not later because I was exhausted for two days after the party. Invites usually go out 4-6 weeks before the party.
2) I started registering early and continue to update my registry.
3) my shower was hosted at my mom's house. She has plenty of space and it was a great choice for me. I asked my mom to host it at home in case I was uncomfortable or needed to rest. It worked out well.

We started looking for places in mid-November for a Jan. 25th shower. Invites were ordered and mailed by 12/10 for a 1/11 RSVP date.

We registered the weekend before the anatomy scan - started with gender neutral things like stroller, car seat, crib, etc. Then once we found out girl, we added more girly things like bedding.

If we had the space and it wasn't the middle of winter, we probably would have done it in a backyard. However, it was really nice not having to worry about cleanup and stuff like that.

My shower was the first in the family (I'm guessing you're Jewish, too). We chose to store all of the gifts received at my mom's and my aunt's until after baby arrived because of superstition. I didn't want anything in our house until afterwards.

1) I was 30 weeks at my shower. I'm glad it wasn't later than that. I looked pregnant, but I still looked good. I wasn't swollen yet lol. I think the invitations went out 4-5 weeks before the shower. My shower was from 1-5 on a Sunday.

2). We started registering after we received my amnio results (around 18 weeks). Registering was a constant work in progress. We kept adding/removing things for a while.

3). My shower was at a restauant. It was easier for my mom and aunt not to have to worry about cleaning up afterwards. When the shower was over, we just left. No mess to clean and nothing to put away.

Thank you! That's super helpful - that's what I was thinking, around 30 weeks. I'm not Jewish, but traditionally (due to culture more than anything) people do it after the baby is born to "show off the baby" from the area I am. It ends up being like 100-200+ people baby shower, which is just not what I want to do lol

Good point about the restaurant vs. at home - that's my biggest concern. I guess it will come down to price too!

Baby Showers & Registries

1. Around what time do you start planning baby shower? When do you normally send invites? Around what time do you ideally have it?

I would say start planning ASAP if you want to have it out at a restaurant or catering hall. My mom starting calling places at the end of December looking to book the end of April and all our top choices were booked already. We ended up having to push the date to the first week of May (I will be 32 weeks at that time). This was about a month ago now and many places were already booked up for May as well. I assume my mom will send out the invites 5-6 weeks beforehand.

2. When did you start registering for things?

I started my registry last weekend. We don't find out the gender until Feb 18th so I'm waiting on some stuff but doing it a little at a time because it is so overwhelming.

3. Anyone planning a shower at home/backyard type of thing? Any pros/cons to consider? Trying to think if this could be a good choice for us since it would be during summer time.

I wanted my shower out. As others have said I didn't want anyone to have to worry about setup/cleanup. Plus I LOVE brunch so I knew I wanted a restaurant brunch shower.
