Help After Baby is born

I saw this article in Dear Abby and thought it was great and wanted to share:

DEAR ABBY: My daughter, the mother of a toddler, just had twins. We live four hours away, so I stayed with them for a few weeks to help her and her husband adjust to their larger family. It taught me a lot about how to help new mothers who are feeling overwhelmed.

It's not about holding the babies; everyone wants to do that. Instead, if you really want to help tired parents, do one of the following:

Take the older children to the park, the library, the zoo, to a diner for breakfast. Keep them happy and safe, and bring them home worn out.

Bring dinner or takeout when visiting. Wash, dry and fold the laundry. Get the kids ready for bed, give them their baths, read books to them and wait until they are asleep to leave.

Clean the house, run the vacuum, empty the garbage and change the beds. Buy groceries (the basics), including paper goods, and grab a box of gallon plastic bags, masking tape and Sharpies (to date frozen foods).

The gift of your time is ever so much more helpful than cute baby outfits that are quickly outgrown. Thanks, Abby! -- PROUD GRANDMA IN NEW YORK

DEAR PROUD GRANDMA: My warm congratulations on the new additions to your family. Your daughter is a lucky woman. Your letter should be clipped and saved by anyone who is looking forward to grandparenthood because it is a classic.

I want to send it to my sister in law who is insisting on visiting from florida RIGHT after the baby is born even though I asked her not to. I just don't know how to do it without seeming rude!

I completely agree that anything helps that can take a bit of pressure off a new parent, but at the same time seems a bit much to have the grandparent do all of the above.
My parents are coming to stay with us when the baby comes and I already told my mom not to do anything other than making sure I know what to do so basically she is there as a back up and to teach.

Re: Help After Baby is born

I think this is wonderful!! Especially if this is not your first child. You need a lot more help if you have older ones at home when you have a newborn.

Help After Baby is born

This is a great letter!
Of course people won't come over and scrub your entire house, but help with tasks here and there is a HUGE help. Stopping at the grocery store on your way over, throwing in a load of laundry, taking an older sibling to the park for a hour...all small things that help a ton!
Our families stocked our freezer with homemade meals which was amazing!

Re: Help After Baby is born

I dont expect any of this, but it would definitely be a big help this time, especially since I will have a toddler this time around. my mom helped and did most of these things when I had my DD. She was such a HUGE help and I really appreciated it.
