LC rec with a reasonable rate
Can anyone recommend a LC with a reasonable rate? I know they're all pretty pricey but the first person I called was $350 and I just can't swing it right now. I'm hoping to pay somewhere in the 200-range (though even that hurts my wallet). My insurance doesn't cover/reimburse. With DD1, I saw Jennifer Schaer MD, who took insurance, but that was under a different plan. DD is eating/gaining well but killing me. She's 2 weeks today and I'm still so cracked on both nipples. They just won't heal despite saline soaks and compresses and round the clock ointments. I think her latch could use some help. I think it's a little shallow--though I've been really working on it.

There are so many free BF support groups that meet weekly. Where did you deliver? You can call your local hospital and see if they have one. It's not private, but it doesn't cost anything.

Thanks all. With DD1 I went to Huntington's BF group for months (I BF DD1 for 12 months) and will probably do that again, but I need some one-on-one help with this latch and unfortunately, that was more support than instruction. DD1 and I had lots of issues in the beginning but latch/bad cracks were not one of them.

I saw Dr. Lauren Macaluso. She took my insurance. She was amazing and was able to help me when another LC couldn't.

Have you contacted a LLL leader? I used to go to the meetings in Huntington and several of them were certified LC's.

I have no rec, but was wondering LC rates. Is it $350 for 1 meeting? Or per hour? How exactly does that work. I BF DD1 until she was 2 without any issues, but am due in March, and would like to know the deal if I did need to call anyone for this LO.

She told me 350 for a few hours--an in-home visit. She didn't say if follow-up was included. It seems like many insurance companies will reimburse now (but not mine).

Has she been checked for an upper lip tie/tongue tie? this can cause latching issues.

Not yet. I only had one weight check two days after we came home and I didn't think to ask. She doesn't go back until the first week of feb. Her tongue looks normal to me but I'm wondering about top lip.
It feels like she is chomping me with her upper gum when she latches.

I used the LC's at Peconiac Pediatrics. They're in Riverhead right near the end of the LIE. Will your insurance cover it if you're seeing a Ped? The ped there is a LC so I was able to go through my insurance and just pay a copay for myself and DD. They were amazing!

That's where I went with DD1 but I had a plan where I could see anyone in network. Now I have a crappy HMO so not sure how that would work now. I called my insurance company the other day and they said I didn't have any lactation coverage.

Thanks for the info, I don't think my insurance covers it and I have the city GHI plan which is exempt from the new ACA requirements.

Sorry no rec for a LC but have you tried the website kellymom.com? It's a great resource.
Also I found with #2 I had latch issues as well. I had given DS a pacifier from birth and he got confused. Have you tried just consistently correcting her? Like taking her off and trying to get her up higher? I had to do this a bit with my little guy. GL!!

The LC that does the group at southside hospital in bay shore is super helpful. It is a support group, but she also works with any moms having trouble during the group. She helped me thru DD's latch issues. She'll show you specific techniques abs things you can do to make things work. It may be worth a visit if you can't find an afforble LC. This is far for you, but they may be worth calling for a referral. Peconic Pediatrics in Riverhead is a Breastfeeding Health Medicine Clinic, or something. They have LCs, and some of the doctors/nurses are trained in breastfeeding health.

That's where I have gone. I see Dr. Shaer and there is a LC Deb there who is so nice and helpful - she is a leader for LLL. I know she runs meetings out of Southampton and I think, Greenport. Check them out online and I think you can find when/where the meeting are. Or, if you go call Peconic Pediatric or the lactation hotline I'm sure they can tell you.
I had such a rough time. It was over 3 months before I was not in constant pain - even with seeing the LC. Every time I went in they'd help DS get latched on but it just killed. I'm still EBF at 6 months (tomorrow .) I wish I had tried one of the meeting while on maternity but I kept forgetting and they are only once a month I believe. Not having gone, I'm not sure exactly what they'd do, but I would think they could take a look at your latch. Good luck and hang in there!!
