What art-ish things do you do with your toddler (and older)?

if you only KNEW how many canvases I have in my home and the WIDE range of acrylic paints and brushes. Dear lord! We have tissue paper for texture, beads for accessorizing, sponges, and even paper clips to 'scrap' the paint off and leave marks. She has it all. She just says "I want to paint" and out comes all the stuff.

Other than that we 'craft' which is more bead work, threading, popsicle sticks, glue, stickers, more tissue paper, cardboard and create objects items or things.

Our major grocer here H-E-B has a place called "Create place" which you can leave your children at as you shop (its a huge store). She LOVES it there. They do crafts, have molding clay, do a since experiment. its crazy.

DD is 20 months and she loves art stuff. She got a ton for christmas. I would say the favorites are crayola finger painting, dot stampers, crayons, and paint with water (she loves the watercolor palettes that come with painting books and I love the M&D first paint with water book). She also got the crayola first easel for christmas and likes doing chalk and white board crayons on that. Stickers is another favorite, any and all kinds! I also got a big pack of foam sheets and felt and cut things out for her to play with (halloween shapes she can add faces to or a christmas tree she can decorate, etc.)

I do not recommend the crayola color wonder stuff. We've tried the first marker, paint markers, and finger painting stuff and none of it seems to entertain DD for more than a minute or two.

Aside from lots of coloring and painting, I love the art kits from the brand Alex. They makes stuff for kids as young as 18 months. I always buy her a few for Xmas. They have collages (everything is pre-cut). This year I bought her one that different cardboard girls that you dress up with stuff you glue or stick on. Right now, DD (3) is making a wooden bead necklace from Melissa & Doug. A family member bought it for her. I was a little nervous about all the beads, but she gets the concept and is enjoying making necklaces.

I will look into the Alex kits. I know the brand but haven't purchased stuff.

I agree about the color wonder. I actually hated the 'finger paint'. The smell was awful!

We paint, color with crayons, play with play doh. I love the coloring books with paint from B&N. Just need some new ideas. Thank you!

When I worked with kids, I did things like taking a huge piece of paper and taped it to the floor and let the kids paint in their diaper. They loved it! I did this in the summer so I could then bring them outside and wash them off.

Toddler and older may be too old for this but I also put the little ones in a high chair, taped some paper to the tray and then put different color baby foods in separate bowls and let them paint with it. If they put their hands in their mouth, it was ok b/c it was food!
