anyone recently travel out of MacArthur airport?

A friend of mine flew out this morning to Orlando and she said it was horrible! She spent 2 hours trying to get thru security, made it to their gate with just 15 minutes to spare. I was wondering if this is the norm for the airport or if she just hit a bad day?
Her flight was at 6:30am. they got there about 4:15am..

Re: anyone recently travel out of MacArthur airport?

I flew out of MacArthur on Saturday 12/21; my flight was also at 6:30.

I got there about 5:15, checked my luggage at the curb, and got through security probably within a half hour/45 minutes. It was busier than normal but I attributed that to it being the weekend right before Christmas.

I normally fly out of MacArthur; never encountered what your friend went through. Glad she made it though!

We always fly out of there, and it's never bad, we have never had to wait more than 20 minutes. But, we never fly that early. I suspect it's busier due to business travelers. I ALWAYS use curbside check in, which speeds it up. You do have to tip the though, so I think that's why the line is always non existent out there Chat Icon

Re: anyone recently travel out of MacArthur airport?

I flew out of McArthur on Southwest in December. We had a 7:30 flight. Arrived at the airport around 6am and were through security in 10 minutes.

I'm very surprised she couldn't get seats with her family especially with an A section for boarding. I've been at the very end of the A section and there are always tons fo seats available.

Southwest is the airline I use the most. I rarely have any issues with them. A delay here and there due to weather but that's about it.

because they let everyone and their brother pre board. Lately when I fly with them there are anywhere between 20-50 people in the pre board. So yes group A makes it tough to keep a family together. I have complained to them and they don't care.

The only people that they let pre-board are people with disabilities. Families board after A now, so they are not part of pre-board.

You can also PAY to pre board I think.
I hate that airline with a passion.

You can pay to be in A. And yes I know they only pre board people with disabilities but because they have open seating people are lying. And believe me people do. I have seen people board on a wheel chair and get off on the other side and practically run to the baggage claim.

I just don't understand how families can't sit together. This makes no sense to me. My kids would freak out if they couldn't sit with me, even if they sat with DH.

I have been on flights where the flight attendant has to offer free drinks to get solo travelers to move so a parent can sit with their kids.

Re: anyone recently travel out of MacArthur airport?

We flew in first week of Dec and did experience the longer security lines. We didn't have an issue with seating on Southwest as we did family boarding after Group A.

Re: anyone recently travel out of MacArthur airport?

What would it take for Southwest to label their freaking seats with a number?
This way people can sit with their families and traveling companions?
Jeez!
It makes no sense to me at all.

An update to their computer system that they don't want to pay for. They say this is one of the reasons they can offer cheap flights.....except their flights are def not cheap anymore.

Re: anyone recently travel out of MacArthur airport?

we flew to orlando in March, no problem, excpet a delay for the plane, but got through security no problem.
With the seating...i was unhappy with it. We had the preboarding pass for my son, and my DH and other son were all together, but not my inlaws.
Coming back, they would only let my DH or myself board with Chris. How can you change your rules??

Unfortunately that is the standard rule, only one companion, unless it's one adult and more than one minor child. Sometimes they bend. But they don't out of Orlando. In the past I have heard them say just save the seats for the other family members by putting your coat, etc. on them.

I know!! I can see if their fligts were cheap, like under $100 but some flights I have looked into were over $200 for EACH way!

See and the last flight I took with them said absolutely no saving seats. They basically said if there isn't a person in the seat then other passengers should consider it open.

I loved flying SW but even with them being in MacArthur they charge too much and seating has become too much of a pain. I would probably fly them if I could find a good fare and it was jsut myself but I'd much rather go Jet blue with the family.
